Freshmen Lift Tennessee Soccer Past Oklahoma 3-1 in Season Finale

Freshman Emerson Moore delivered a first-half brace and fellow newcomer Cora Fry added an insurance goal on Sunday afternoon at Regal Soccer Stadium, powering Tennessee past Oklahoma 3-1 in what was likely the final game of the season.

The victory brought the Lady Vols’ final record to 7-5-4 overall and 2-5-3 in Southeastern Conference play. More importantly, it snapped a winless streak, marking their first conference win since a Sept. 11 victory over LSU.

Despite the strong finish, Tennessee missed the SEC Tournament after finishing the conference slate with nine points, which left them fourth-lowest in the standings. LSU secured the final tournament spot with 10 points following a draw against Missouri on Sunday.

Emerson Moore Breaks Through Early for the Lady Vols

Moore set the tone early in the match, etching her name into the scorebook with the first two goals of her collegiate career. Her first strike came in the sixth minute when she drove into the box and launched a shot toward the far post that rolled untouched into the net.

That tally marked Tennessee’s fourth lead of conference play. Thirty-six minutes later, Moore struck again, collecting a pass in the middle of the box and beating the Oklahoma goalkeeper to the right side to push the advantage to 2-0.

“I thought she was gritty and tough. It was about getting on first and second balls. I think all the midfielders — her, Ines and Dak did a really good job of finding space, especially in the first half to get on the ball. It really allowed us to keep the ball on their end for long stretches,” head coach Joe Kirt said.

Tennessee outshot Oklahoma 12 to 11 on the afternoon, putting five shots on target with three finding the back of the net. Goalkeeper Cayden Norris anchored the defense with four saves, limiting the Sooners to a single score.

Cora Fry Extends the Lead as Freshmen Deliver Under Pressure

Oklahoma managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 57th minute via a header. Fry answered by collecting a feed from Ines Derrien and chipping it past the goalkeeper for her first career goal.

Fry logged 77 minutes of action, converting her only shot of the match into a crucial insurance score. Kirt pointed to the mental and physical demands placed on first-year players as the calendar turns to November.

“As a freshman, the most challenging part is staying through and playing into November. It’s the most grueling kind of thing they’ve ever done, and for them to step up at the end of the season right now is a credit to Sam Black, our performance coach, but also to them mentally and physically. So they’ve done a great job,” Kirt said.

Forward Sophia Prime also helped establish early control. Her ability to hold up possession allowed Tennessee to build attacks higher up the pitch and keep sustained pressure on the Sooner defense.

NCAA Tournament Hopes Rest on RPI Bubble

With the SEC Tournament out of reach, Tennessee’s postseason fate now hinges on the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Because Oklahoma is a top-50 team, the victory provides a valuable resume boost.

“It’ll help us. How much? We’ll see at the end of the next week,” Kirt said. “But we’ll give ourselves an opportunity with where we are. I don’t know where our RPI is at the moment, but I believe we’re in that bubble. So we’ll see how things go. We’ve got several top 50 results. At least we have one top 50 win, so that’s a start.”

The Lady Vols will now await their official postseason fate when the selection show takes place on Nov. 16.
