Joe Buck and Troy Aikman face an uncertain future together as a broadcast partnership following a heated confrontation at SoFi Stadium and contrasting contract renewals with ESPN that leave Aikman heading toward free agency after Super Bowl LXI in February 2027.
The long-running partnership between play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and color analyst Troy Aikman is moving toward a conclusion after 25 seasons together across Fox and ESPN’s Monday Night Football. The underlying strain broke into the open ahead of an October game at SoFi Stadium when the two broadcasters exchanged harsh words in the stadium booth.
I captured this clip (along with more) during pregame before Rams/Bills Monday Night Football. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were standing near the MNF countdown set for around an hour before going up to the booth but weren’t seen together or speaking to each other. Broadcasters Clash over Contract Before Game
The friction between the two broadcasters came to a head before the Buffalo Bills played the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5. After weeks of mounting tension, Buck brought up the contract situation, prompting a sharp response from his longtime broadcast partner, according to detailed reporting from Puck.
Dude, are we really going to do this?

Aikman’s immediate response left no doubt about how he viewed the situation. According to sources with direct knowledge of the exchange cited by Puck, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback made his feelings plain.

According to sources, Aikman expressed frustration, stating he felt betrayed by the circumstances surrounding the contract negotiations.
The root of the anger stems from how Buck secured his new agreement. Last month, news surfaced that Buck had agreed to a six-year, $100-plus-million contract extension with ESPN parent company Disney, keeping him with the network through 2031. Buck and his representatives negotiated that deal in May, but neither Buck, ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro, nor their shared agency, Creative Artists Agency, informed Aikman. Sources told reporters that Aikman viewed the secrecy as a betrayal while he was simultaneously trying to negotiate his own extension.

Free Agency Looming After Super Bowl LXI
While Buck is locked in for the long term, Aikman remains on a five-year, $90 million deal that pays him roughly $18 million annually. That contract expires at the conclusion of the current NFL season, which culminates in Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027. ESPN will carry the game for the first time in network history.
Aikman addressed his contract status directly during a radio appearance on Dallas station KTCK-FM.

I’ll broadcast through this season, and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens.
Troy Aikman, color commentator for ESPN
Talks on a new deal for Aikman stalled after one of his representatives suggested a valuation around $30 million per year, representing a massive jump over his current rate and pushing toward the market standard set when Fox Sports signed Tom Brady to a 10-year, $375m contract. ESPN management has adopted a firm public stance regarding the ongoing uncertainty.
To that end, we won’t be addressing talent contract specifics publicly before the Super Bowl.

Smoothing Over On-Air Disconnects for the Remainder of the Season
Following their disagreement in Los Angeles, Buck addressed both Aikman and the entire Monday Night Football production team before the following week’s game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders. Buck apologized for losing his cool, telling the group that they were adults with jobs to do and that they needed to move forward to have a great year. Aikman reportedly offered no public response.
This isn’t real.Theres been zero conversation about this.
Despite the private friction, media observers noted that the broadcast partners kept things copacetic on the air, maintaining their standard professional demeanor during game telecasts while leaving viewers with only the game on the field.
Potential Successors for the Monday Night Football Booth
If Aikman departs when his contract expires, sports media analysts have already begun surfacing high-profile names as potential replacements alongside Buck. Fox color commentator Greg Olsen leads speculation given that his contract with Fox expires at the end of the season after he was moved to the network’s No. 2 team following Tom Brady’s arrival. Other names mentioned by industry observers include Kurt Warner and Jason Kelce.
I've already posted that this isn't real..There's Monday Night Football business happening in a very public way..We're BIG fans of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman..I'm not supposed to be in a football booth and there’s never been a conversation about me being in the Monday Night… pic.twitter.com/5BzzL3ownM
