Brentford have secured the signing of Mali international Mamadou Sangare from RC Lens for a club-record fee, with the midfielder agreeing to a long-term contract through 2031. The 24-year-old arrives to bolster Keith Andrews’s squad ahead of their Premier League campaign opening against Tottenham Hotspur.
The agreement surpasses the club’s previous transfer records, eclipsing the outlay for Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth last summer.
Transfer negotiations moved quickly to fend off interest from rival clubs. Crystal Palace had also been linked with the player in recent weeks, but Brentford avoided a bidding war by reaching a verbal agreement through journalist Florian Plettenberg before finalising terms. Lens left Sangare out of their Como Cup fixture as discussions advanced.

Brentford coach Keith Andrews highlighted the player’s background and development as key factors in the recruitment decision. The coaching staff monitored the Malian midfielder across his progression in European leagues, identifying him as a prime fit for the club’s tactical framework.

Sangare is slated to fill the central midfield role vacated by Jordan Henderson, whose contract was mutually terminated after a single season to allow for a move to Chelsea. Operating within Andrews’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, the newcomer is expected to bring defensive ball-winning capabilities and composure under pressure to the starting lineup.
Rise Through Austria and a Historic Campaign in France
The midfielder’s journey to the Premier League spans multiple European competitions. Born in Bamako, Mali, Sangare began his career at Yeelen Olympique, where he earned the nickname gaucher
for his left foot. In September 2020, his performances secured him a five-year contract with Austrian giants RB Salzburg.
Salzburg loaned the young prospect out to gain experience across several clubs. He played for FC Liefering, Grazer AK in the 2021-22 season, Zulte Waregem in Belgium, and TSV Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga from February 2023. Roland Puchas of TSV Hartberg noted the impact Sangare had during his 48 appearances there, which included a crucial winning goal against Altach to secure league survival.
Rapid Vienna sporting director Markus Katzer subsequently negotiated a deal with Salzburg to sign Sangare for €700k, promising the player they would not stand in his way if a major European club came calling. In his sole season in Ligue 1, Sangare made 33 competitive appearances, helping Lens win the Coupe de France for the first time and secure a second-place finish and Champions League qualification.
National Team Recognition and Future Prospects in West London
Tom Saintfiet, who managed the Mali national team before stepping down in April, recalled Sangare’s immediate self-assurance upon entering international camp in September 2024.
Tom Saintfiet, the former head coach of the Mali national team, recalled via The Athletic that Yves Bissouma had asked questions of the new players and inquired about their preferred positions, to which Mamadou had replied that he preferred Bissouma’s own position, demonstrating a high degree of confidence and belief.
Saintfiet also noted the player’s status back home, calling him a rising star and a national role model following his numerous caps and international participation.
As part of the financial agreement between the clubs, Rapid Vienna is set to receive a 12.5% sell-on fee from the transaction. With personal terms agreed through the summer of 2031 pending a medical examination, the midfielder could make his first appearance for his new club in a friendly fixture against Rennes on August 8, ahead of the Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur on August 22.
