Dontayvion Wicks Seeks to Justify a Lucrative Contract and Big Expectations

The Philadelphia Eagles added significant pressure to Dontayvion Wicks this offseason by handing the Green Bay Packers castoff a one-year contract extension worth $12.5 million, with $9 million fully guaranteed, before he even participated in a single practice with the team. Philadelphia acquired Wicks via trade on April 10th in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick, offering the wide receiver an opportunity to secure a prominent role in a new offense he already recognizes from working with offensive coordinator Sean Mannion in Green Bay.

That familiarity, however, comes paired with considerable expectations. Following the departure of A.J. Thursday’s practice session at the Jefferson Health Training Complex provided a glimpse of what Wicks can bring to the passing game. Late in the workout during the first team’s final rep in 11-on-11 drills, Jalen Hurts rolled out left on play action, spotted Wicks sprinting downfield toward the left pylon, and launched a deep pass. Sandwiched between two defenders, the 6-foot-1 receiver leaped and secured the ball roughly 30 yards downfield for a massive completion that drew a stunned reaction from the watching crowd.

For Wicks, the flash of brilliance is part of adjusting to a new franchise and establishing chemistry with his new teammates, including Smith, whom he has known of since childhood.

“Smitty, he from Louisiana. I’m from Louisiana. Growing up, I knew about Smitty. And me and Smitty talked before I got here. Being here with him, it’s a great guy to look up to. His route running is very smooth, real smooth in his routes. And I feel that same way about myself.”

While Wicks manufactured a highlight-reel moment, the defensive unit capitalized on mistakes elsewhere on the roster. Veteran edge rusher A.J. Epenesa turned around to track a loose ball after a pass deflected off receiver Danny Gray in the flat, securing an interception during 7-on-7s. On the very next play, linebacker Jihaad Campbell jumped in front of a pass to log a second interception for the defense.

The session proved far more difficult for rookie quarterback Cole Payton. The fifth-round draft pick out of North Dakota State endured a rough outing, throwing three interceptions during 7-on-7 work, including a third picked off cleanly by linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby. Though Payton finds himself in a developmental role where early mistakes are expected, Thursday’s practice underscored the steep learning curve facing rookies adjusting to the professional level.

Filling the Void in a Transformed Philadelphia Offense

The acquisition of Wicks marks the third straight offseason in which Roseman has traded for a wide receiver before the start of the season, following previous additions such as Jahan Dotson and John Metchie. The constant reshaping of the offensive supporting cast highlights the franchise’s aggressive approach to maintaining depth around Hurts.

Early-career issues with dropped passes followed Wicks from Green Bay, where he recorded 14 drops over three seasons, though he managed to trim that total down to just two during the 2025 campaign. If Mannion can successfully unlock that production, Wicks could prove essential as a chain-mover on third downs and in the short areas of the field.

Wicks emphasized that his primary focus remains simple as camp continues and the team prepares for the upcoming season.

“I want to be the best I can be, fill in the void. Whatever the team asks me to do, step up and play that role. I just think of it as capitalizing on my opportunity that’s given to me. We never know what happens throughout the season. Just taking it day by day and keep on working to be the best.”
