Grayson Waller made a surprise return to WWE NXT on July 28, delivering a scathing promo after three years on the main roster. Waller called out the men’s roster, targeted Austin Theory, and announced his intention to challenge Tony D’Angelo for the NXT Championship.
A Fiery Return and Frustrations With the Main Roster
Stepping back into the developmental brand to rattle some cages,
Waller looked back at major milestones from his career, such as his main roster debut at Madison Square Garden and capturing the SmackDown Tag Team Championship alongside Austin Theory at WrestleMania 40.
Despite those early career highs, Waller claimed that the subsequent two years of his WWE career turned into an absolute embarrassment.
He questioned whether he had spoken out of turn backstage or failed to navigate company politics, while firmly insisting that his talent and work ethic were never the root of the problem.
Targeting Austin Theory and TNA Wrestling
A central pillar of Waller’s explosive promo involved his former tag team partner Austin Theory. Having achieved success together under the banner of A-Town Down Under, Waller now maintains that the partnership weighed him down.
Waller mocked Theory with that description and joked that that Marty Jannetty is still allergic to the microphone,
while telling the loud crowd that he shouldered most of the workload while receiving minimal credit. He also likened his past year to playing a secondary character in someone else’s narrative.
During the segment, Waller also took a shot at TNA Wrestling when discussing recent debutant Cruz Montana, remarking, It’s not 2005 lad, being the top guy in TNA Wrestling is like being the best basketball player at the local YMCA.
Unfinished Business and the NXT Championship Pursuit
Rather than remaining sidelined to collect a paycheck, Waller stated he came back to NXT to settle unfinished business. He pointed out that never winning the NXT Championship has consistently bothered him, noting how former champions like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins, Johnny Gargano, Bron Breakker, Trick Williams, Carmelo Hayes, and Oba Femi evolved into much bigger stars after holding the belt.
Because he missed out on capturing the title, Waller expressed frustration over being positioned as a Netflix ad break comedy act.
He directly announced his target: current champion Tony D’Angelo.
Calling Out the NXT Locker Room and Shawn Michaels
When production personnel attempted to cut off his microphone, Waller dared Shawn Michaels to send someone out to physically stop him. As fans in attendance chanted HBK,
Waller shifted his focus to the entire NXT men’s roster, describing them as soft, lazy, and excessively comfortable.
He further claimed that the NXT women’s division was running laps
around their male counterparts, criticizing wrestlers who settle for simply reaching WWE rather than striving to become top-tier stars.
Refusing to Be Silenced On Camera
Even after television production completely muted his microphone, Waller refused to back down or leave the ring. He tossed the audio device aside, approached a ringside camera directly, and kept delivering his message until the broadcast segment was ultimately cut.
