Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever exited the WNBA playoffs on Thursday after a 94-83 defeat to the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in Game 3. The decisive first-round loss in Las Vegas ended a record-setting season for the Fever and set up new offseason expectations for the franchise’s young core.

Las Vegas Aces Seal Series Victory Behind A’ja Wilson

The defending champion Las Vegas Aces eliminated the Indiana Fever 94-83 inside Michelob Ultra Arena to win their first-round playoff series two games to one. Four-time MVP A’ja Wilson led all scorers with 36 points and 10 rebounds, taking control when the game tightened in the fourth quarter. Chelsea Gray added 23 points and five assists, while Jackie Young contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

The physical contest featured a stark disparity at the free-throw line. The Aces attempted 35 free throws, converting 28, while the Fever managed just 20 attempts and made 14. Wilson alone shot 15 free throws, nearly matching Indiana’s entire team total. Fever coach Stephanie White pointed to those margins after the final buzzer.

“I think some of it is we missed some shots that we typically make. I thought there was a level of physicality, we couldn’t get to the rim. They turned it up a little bit… It’s a game of the margins. They had 35 free throws, we had 20.”

Stephanie White, head coach of the Indiana Fever

When asked about the free-throw margin during the postgame press conference, Caitlin Clark offered a brief two-word reaction: Hmm, interesting.

Officiating Controversies and Clark’s Bloody Mouth in Game 3

Competitive tensions boiled over early and often in the do-or-die matchup. Just three minutes into the contest, Clark pushed former Fever teammate Brianna Turner away from an Indiana huddle, resulting in double technical fouls for both players. In the second quarter, Turner tangled with Fever guard Lexie Hull, hooking Hull’s arm and pulling her to the ground. Officials whistled Hull for a foul, sparking fierce protests from White and the Indiana bench that ultimately failed to draw a review.

Late in the fourth quarter, with the Fever trailing by five points, Clark caught an inadvertent elbow from Jewell Loyd while battling for a rebound under the basket. No foul was called on the play. Clark briefly left the floor to receive medical attention for a bloody mouth before returning to the game, walking directly up to an official to point out the injury.

Clark finished the night with 18 points, four assists, four blocks, two steals, and six turnovers on 18 field-goal attempts. She and backcourt teammate Kelsey Mitchell combined for 41 points, but shot just 13-for-41 overall and 6-for-23 from beyond the arc.

Record-Setting Seasons End in First-Round Exit

The defeat eliminates Indiana for the second consecutive season at the hands of Las Vegas, repeating the No. 6 seed’s early postseason exit. Despite failing to reach their championship aspirations, the roster posted historic offensive numbers. Clark and Mitchell formed the highest-scoring duo in WNBA history for the league’s top-scoring offense. Clark averaged 22.3 points and 8.3 assists per game, ranking second in the league in assists and third in scoring. Mitchell averaged 24.7 points, broke the single-season scoring record with 1,086 points, and set a new benchmark for 3-pointers with 135.

Reflecting on the season, Clark emphasized the positives of her campaign.

“I was able to come out here and put together the best season I’ve had and perform at a really high level and basically get better in every area and still feel like I have so many areas to improve. So, I guess that’s the most exciting part moving forward. I love the work. I love being in the gym. So, I’ll probably be kicked out for a little while, but we’ll get back to it.”

Roster Questions and Offseason Uncertainty for Indiana

With the elimination finalized, the Fever face a critical offseason regarding player retention and roster construction. Kelsey Mitchell becomes an unrestricted free agent after putting together what Clark called the best season of any guard in league history.

For now, the young roster takes away hard-earned postseason lessons from an experienced opponent that has now advanced to the semifinals for the eighth straight season.

“Being part of playoffs, this is what it’s all about, to get the experience, to figure out what you’ve got to be better at, to figure out what your flaws [are], to figure out what your weaknesses are. I think as a group, we still are getting our feet wet on the playoff experience side. And we played against a team that is full of playoff experiences. So that speaks for itself.”

The Fever will now look to apply these lessons as they begin preparing for next season with a better understanding of the challenges required to compete at this level.
