Manchester City Found Guilty of 114 Charges Amid Record Spending

Following a guilty verdict on 114 charges of financial rule breaches, Manchester City invested more than €500 million in new players over the summer. According to ESPN, the club was informed as early as July about the independent panel’s findings, facing possible sanctions including heavy fines, a transfer ban, and enforced relegation.

The Premier League made public a guilty verdict against Manchester City on almost all charges, putting English football on edge. An independent commission found the club guilty of 114 charges relating to alleged financial rule breaches between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. According to the allegations, the total amount involved is around £900 million, with accusations that the club artificially inflated revenue through sham contracts, reduced costs, and falsified financial reports.

City rejected the allegations and announced plans to exhaust all legal remedies. What sanctions will ultimately be imposed remains open, with possible punishments including fines, points deductions, the stripping of titles, and enforced relegation. The Premier League wants to move the proceedings on quickly, though the hearing on the sanctions is to remain confidential.

Record Summer Spending Amid Looming Sanctions

Despite looming sanctions and months of prior knowledge regarding the impending verdict, Manchester City invested a total of more than €500 million in new players in the summer. According to information from ESPN, City were informed as early as July about the findings of the independent panel that was to make a recommendation on the verdict, meaning the club knew for months about possible consequences like heavy fines, a transfer ban, and enforced relegation.

This spending set a new record for the most expensive transfer window in football history. More than €300 million alone went toward three players: Enzo Fernandez for €145 million, Elliot Anderson for €125 million, and Ayyoub Bouaddi for €95 million. According to ESPN, only the Anderson transfer was completed before the information about the impending verdict reached the club. After receiving the findings, City still spent more than €400 million on further transfers.
