The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired winger Kirill Marchenko, goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, and forward Miles Wood from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade. Marchenko immediately signed a six-year, $75 million contract extension carrying an average annual value of $12.5 million.

Monday’s trade brought a definitive end to months of speculation surrounding Marchenko’s future in Columbus. Having previously indicated to the front office that he was reluctant to sign another extension in Columbus beyond the upcoming season, Marchenko became the centerpiece of a major roster shakeup as NHL teams finalized their opening-week rosters.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to return to the playoffs in the 2026-27 season. With Tuesday’s opening night rapidly approaching, discussions are underway between Toronto and the Columbus Blue Jackets regarding a trade for Kirill Marchenko. Now, those talks have come to fruition, according to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman. The Maple Leafs will be acquiring Marchenko, Miles Wood, and Elvis Merzlikins. The Blue Jackets will be retaining some of the salary for Merzlikins. In return, Steven Lorentz, Matthew Knies, and Emil Andrae will head to Columbus alongside a second-round selection. Having signed a three-year contract prior to the 2024-25 campaign carrying a $3.85 million AAV, Marchenko is entering the final year of that pact, though Columbus worried he would decline a contract extension to stay with the franchise. That led to the trade talks starting and ultimately Marchenko being moved.

Don Waddell Trades Marchenko, Merzlikins, and Wood to Toronto

COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Monday, as clubs were putting the finishing touches on their opening week rosters, Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell shipped the forward to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a massive seven-player swap, despite having previously stated that Kirill Marchenko would begin the campaign in Columbus. In exchange for left wing Matthew Knies, center Steven Lorentz, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a conditional 2027 NHL Draft second-round pick, the Blue Jackets also sent left wing Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to Toronto. Marchenko was playing out the final season of his contract before inking a six-year, $75 million extension with the Maple Leafs. Prior to the June draft, he informed the Columbus front office of his unwillingness to sign a contract extension with the organization.

The Trade Package Sent to Columbus

To acquire Marchenko along with veteran depth and goaltending security, Toronto surrendered a package featuring homegrown forward Matthew Knies, center Steven Lorentz, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a conditional second-round choice in the 2027 NHL Draft.

“Matthew is a big, strong power forward who combines tough, hard-nosed physical play with outstanding offensive skills. He is a young player with great character and work ethic and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to the Blue Jackets family.”

Over 240 career appearances with Toronto, the 23-year-old Knies amassed 67 goals, 93 assists, 160 points, and 119 penalty minutes—including 11 power-play goals, 22 power-play assists, 33 total power-play points, 11 game-winning goals, 505 hits, and 411 shots on goal—while logging an average ice time of 16:56. He has registered consecutive 20-goal and 50-point seasons during his first three NHL campaigns. The winger was originally selected by Toronto in the second round, 57th overall.

Kirill Marchenko Signs Six-Year Extension With Toronto

By securing Marchenko on a six-year, $75 million extension negotiated by agent Dan Milstein, the Maple Leafs locked up a premier top-six right winger who recorded 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points across 76 games last season.

Monday saw Marchenko, Elvis Merzlikins—who is dealing with a shoulder injury—and Miles Wood packaged from the Blue Jackets to Toronto in a deal that brought back Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae, Matthew Knies, and a second-round choice, as reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports that upon being traded on Monday, Marchenko bypassed his reluctance to sign a long-term pact in Columbus by inking a six-year, $72.5 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs. During the 2025-26 regular season, Marchenko filled a key role for Columbus across 76 games, putting up 27 goals, 40 assists, 61 hits, 40 blocked shots, and 32 penalty minutes while averaging 18:57 of ice time.

Alongside Marchenko, Toronto absorbed the contracts of forward Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins. Merzlikins carries a $5.4 million cap hit and is currently on long-term injured reserve with a shoulder injury, with 18 percent of his salary retained by Columbus in the transaction. Wood, who scored eight goals and six assists in 54 games for the Blue Jackets last season, has already cleared waivers and is eligible to report directly to Toronto’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Opening Night Context and Immediate Schedule

The blockbuster transaction concludes an intense period of league-wide interest that saw clubs including the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights, and Seattle Kraken monitor Marchenko’s availability. Instead of heading elsewhere, Marchenko steps straight into a Toronto lineup preparing for opening night.
