England manager Thomas Tuchel revealed that midfielder Jude Bellingham performs at his best when playing with anger, following a tense 3-2 defeat to Spain in the UEFA Nations League opener. Tuchel noted that opponent provocations help ignite the Real Madrid star, who recently claimed England’s Player of the Year award.
Jude Bellingham thrives under pressure, and according to England manager Thomas Tuchel, giving the 23-year-old a reason to be angry is the key to unlocking his peak performance. Speaking to British broadcaster Sky Sports, Tuchel explained that opposing teams attempting to provoke the midfielder only serve to bring out his best qualities—a trait that was also evident during the 2026 World Cup.
It is better that he plays with a little bit of anger. This is his way. I think he is looking sometimes for these moments to ignite his fire.
Club Teammates Clash During Spain Encounter
During England’s opening match of the Nations League campaign against Spain—which ended in a 3-2 loss—Bellingham engaged in a verbal altercation with Real Madrid teammate Marc Cucurella. Addressing the flashpoint, Tuchel made it clear that club loyalties are temporarily suspended once a player takes the pitch for their national team.
I think he doesn’t know any teammates when he is with the national team. He wants to win. He stays a friend to them, but not during the 90 minutes.
Despite the defeat, Bellingham’s relentless drive pushed England to maintain pressure right up until the final whistle, forcing Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon into a late save.
Back-to-Back Player of the Year Honors
The manager’s comments arrived just two days after Bellingham was crowned England’s Player of the Year for the 2025–2026 season, securing the accolade for the second year. Fans voted for the midfielder via the official England national team app.
Over the course of the international season, the Real Madrid star made 12 appearances, finding the back of the net 7 times and contributing one assist. All seven of those goals came during the 2026 World Cup, setting a new record for an England men’s player at a major tournament. Tuchel praised the midfielder, stating that he was among the standout players not just for England, but across the entire World Cup.
Managing Workload Ahead of Czech Republic Clash
While Tuchel would ideally feature the young star in all four of England’s matches during the current international window, the manager admitted concerns regarding the heavy physical demands. Bellingham has not played matches at such an intense frequency so far this season, prompting the coaching staff to coordinate closely with physiotherapists to avoid taking unnecessary risks with his fitness.

England faces a grueling schedule of four Nations League fixtures spread across an 11-day span. Next up, Tuchel’s side travels to Prague to take on the Czech Republic on Tuesday, September 29.
