Hector Ó hEochagáin Reveals Brain Surgery After 15-Year Medical Journey
Broadcaster Hector Ó hEochagáin has disclosed that he underwent brain surgery during the summer to remove a small tumor from his pituitary gland. The procedure took place in July in Galway after medics decided to operate on a growth they had been monitoring for 15 years because it was beginning to alter essential daily hormones.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1’s Brendan O’Connor show, Ó hEochagáin explained that the condition involved a TSH-secreting adenoma, which he described as quite rare, affecting one in every two or three million people. The pituitary gland regulates the body’s daily feelings, metabolism, heart rate, blood, and thyroid function. “It affects hidden things in the body. It’s a very powerful thing the pituitary gland,” he said.
Managing a Rare Condition and Preparing for Surgery
Before undergoing the operation in July, Ó hEochagáin managed the condition for years with injections and had never previously been under a general anaesthetic or inside an operating theatre. Because his specific adenoma affected only one in every two or three million people, he also took part in a study in Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Describing the procedure itself, the broadcaster noted the physical reality of the intervention. “It is when he [the medic] tells you he’s going up through the nose, and going to drill through to the scull,” he said, adding that the pituitary is the size of a grape and the growth on the back of it was the size of a sweetcorn, measuring 6 millimetres.
Ó hEochagáin Recovers in Galway After Surgery
Only his wife and family knew about his condition until he first discussed it publicly on The Tommy, Hector and Laurita podcast. Following the surgery, Ó hEochagáin stated that he feels good and expressed gratitude to his medical team in Galway.
His recovery involved a couple of months of taking it easy and enjoying the weather in Galway. Reflecting on whether the experience altered his outlook, he emphasized maintaining a positive attitude, surrounding oneself with good people, conversing, stepping away from mobile phones, and enjoying everyday moments like the sidelines of football pitches.
