Meta Expands Louisiana Hyperion Data Center With Over $50 Billion Investment

Meta Platforms is expanding its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to a 5-gigawatt facility with total project investments crossing $50 billion.

Meta is pushing its artificial intelligence infrastructure build-out to physical and financial scales in rural Louisiana. The social media giant is pouring an additional $40 billion into its Hyperion data center campus in Richland Parish, bringing the total estimated project cost to more than $50 billion.

When the project first broke ground in December 2024, the initial commitment stood at $10 billion for a facility planned at 2 gigawatts. The footprint is now expanding across more than 3,200 acres of what was previously farmland, making the site eventually more than four times the size of New York City’s Central Park. Construction employment tied to the project is climbing to around 7,500 workers—roughly 50% higher than initial projections—while permanent jobs at the completed facility are expected to double to about 1,000. Meta reported that local Louisiana businesses have received more than $1.6 billion in contracts since construction began.

At the same time, the rapid industrialization has brought local friction. To mitigate infrastructure strain, Meta pledged to invest over $1 billion in local improvements, including roads, water, and wastewater systems.

Consumer advocates, including the Alliance for Affordable Energy, have warned that if Meta were to leave Louisiana before its 20-year power contract expires, ordinary ratepayers could be left holding the bill for the newly constructed gas plants. Environmental and consumer groups have also scrutinized the state’s economic incentives, which include a 20-year sales tax exemption for data centers built before 2029, signed into law by Landry in late 2024.

Timeline and the Road to Complete Build-Out

The timeline for the Hyperion campus spans well into the next decade, reflecting the engineering hurdles required to bring 5 gigawatts online. According to scheduling details provided by CNBC, the facility is projected to reach 2 gigawatts of capacity by 2030, with the full 5-gigawatt build-out slated for completion around 2032.
