OpenAI is developing a portable, screenless smart speaker powered by advanced AI and equipped with cameras and sensors to act as a humanlike home companion. The unannounced device, targeted for unveiling later this year and release in 2027, marks the company’s biggest consumer hardware move since its acquisition of io.
OpenAI’s hardware ambitions are stepping out of the developer workspace and into the living room. Following the release of a developer macro pad for Codex coders built with Work Louder, the ChatGPT maker is preparing a mobile, screen-free smart speaker designed to serve as a new type of computer for the AI era.
Rather than sitting as a static accessory, the device is engineered to act as a humanlike companion that lives in the home. The project is the first major consumer hardware product emerging from io, the startup OpenAI acquired from former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive for $6.5bn last year.
Engineering a Proactive Home Computer With Personality
Internally, OpenAI avoids calling the device a speaker, categorizing it instead as a computer built specifically for artificial intelligence. Operating on a rechargeable battery, the hardware can remain plugged into a single room or be carried from room to room throughout the day, moving from the laundry room to the kitchen and into the bedroom.

The hardware relies on a camera and other sensors to understand its surroundings and context, operating with advanced voice capabilities built on a more sophisticated version of GPT-Live. Beyond simply answering questions, playing media, and controlling smart-home appliances, the device is designed to anticipate user needs.
To support that illusion of life, the device features mechanical elements that can move on their own, creating a sense that it is active rather than waiting passively for commands. It can also pull from personal information such as emails to build a tailored profile of its owner.
Market Competition and Legal Pressure From Apple
The impending hardware push has already rattled traditional audio and tech companies. Sonos stock dropped more than 10% in late trading before trimming losses following the report, while Apple slipped slightly to $313.52.

The competition extends deep into the courtroom.

OpenAI maintains that its speaker veers significantly from any Apple device currently on the market, making trade-secret infringement unlikely. The legal battle threatens to complicate an aggressive hardware pipeline that reportedly includes roughly five devices in development.
Broader Hardware Roadmap and Privacy Questions
The portable speaker serves as the opening move in a wider hardware strategy. Long-term plans at OpenAI include developing a mobile device capable of replacing the smartphone, alongside explored wearable products including a pendant and home robotics. Earlier reports indicate the speaker could be priced in a range if it reaches store shelves.
However, introducing a camera-equipped, continuously listening assistant into private homes highlights pressing questions regarding data security. Because the device draws on personal messages and ambient home activity to provide proactive assistance, clear limits around data collection, retention, access, and account security will ultimately determine whether consumers trust it in their living spaces.
