Homebrew developer Sword has updated the PS5SX2 emulator to allow jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles to read original PS2 game discs, copy their data, and run them at resolutions up to six times native. The feature requires firmware between versions 7.00 and 13.60.

Released on October 10, 2026, version 2.01 of the PS5SX2 emulator introduced beta support for booting original PS2 DVDs straight through a console’s internal optical drive. A modder known as Sword has achieved physical disc playback for PlayStation 2 games on current-gen hardware. Rather than streaming from a PC or relying entirely on pre-made digital images, the software recompiles code natively using the PlayStation 5’s custom Zen 2 CPU and a modified Vulkan graphics driver. Creator Sword has made no secret of the project’s artificial intelligence integration, noting on its GitHub page that Claude contributed to the work.

The breakthrough builds on the PCSX2 project, a long-running open-source emulator core adapted here specifically for console hardware. While earlier iterations of homebrew emulation on the console required users to load games exclusively from stored ISO files, the latest updates give owners a way to interact with physical media. The process relies on a copy-then-launch method rather than streaming straight off the laser in real time. Sword also received special thanks from _AlAzif during the development and release of the project.

How PS5SX2 Dumps and Launches Physical Discs

When an original game disc goes into the tray, the system displays an entry on the shelf featuring a spinning disc icon, a progress arc, and a live percentage reading labelled Copying NN%. Operating the disc feature requires specific steps from the user. The software copies the game data in its entirety to the console’s internal SSD or an external hard drive on the first use. Subsequent sessions launch directly from that local copy.

Version 2.02 added an experimental feature for reading discs via external USB DVD or Blu-ray drives, opening up physical media usage for owners of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition. If a disc contains bad sectors and the copying process runs into an interruption, the program stops the auto-launch and leaves a marker to signify that the dump is incomplete. Beyond standard discs, the emulator handles game formats including ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO, and supports media from any regional release.

Hardware Limits of the Optical Drive

The built-in optical drive lacks the specific laser required to read standard compact discs. Physical disc support comes with a distinct set of constraints tied directly to Sony’s factory hardware. Consequently, any classic PS2 titles or original PlayStation 1 games that were released on CD media are completely incompatible with the internal drive dumping method. Because the console’s hardware lacks CD reading capabilities, no software patch can bypass this limitation to make an unsupported disc format readable.

Players must supply their own PlayStation 2 BIOS dumped from personal hardware, along with a console capable of running unofficial code. Using the system also demands specific software prerequisites that the package leaves out. The current homebrew environment centers on the Relapse exploit, which covers system software versions 7.00 through 13.60. Consoles updated beyond version 13.60 cannot execute the exploit. Running the emulator voids warranty-equivalent protections, risks bricking the console, and causes the user to lose access to certain online features.

Pushing Retro Software Resolution to Near 4K

The project features resolution scaling up to six times native for standard units, pushing output into territory close to 4K. Running retro software natively opens the door to significant graphical upgrades that outstrip the original hardware capabilities. Post-processing options include CRT, VHS, and scanline filters, alongside AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution.

The software supports widescreen patches, custom frame rate boosts, and online multiplayer by emulating a network adapter to route traffic to community servers. Version 2.00 also introduced built-in frame generation, allowing 30fps titles to display at the equivalent of 60fps and 60fps games to hit 120fps when paired with a compatible 120Hz display. RetroAchievements integration triggers trophy pop-ups styled after the modern interface. Gamers can also fine-tune graphics, audio, and gameplay settings directly from their smartphone or tablet, with changes taking effect instantly.

Users Accuse Manufacturer of Restricting Backward Compatibility

Users have accused the manufacturer of restricting backward compatibility to push digital re-releases and subscription tiers, while the community has celebrated the technical leap with social media praise calling the release This is insanity! and This is massive,. Users can only access official PlayStation 2 games on the console via curated digital store purchases or the PlayStation Plus Classics library, which recently expanded to include Mega Man X Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2, and Ratchet & Clank.

Development is already looking past the current generation of retro software. When asked in social media comments whether disc emulation would extend to the next library generation, developer Sword confirmed future plans with a direct reply.

“Yes, it’s coming with it :).”

Meanwhile, Sony plans to stop producing any new games on physical media starting in January 2028, a milestone that adds urgency to community preservation efforts. Developer Sword indicated that a port of the RPCS3 emulator is in the works to explore PlayStation 3 game dumping from physical discs, though an official release date has not been set.
