Russell Brand arrived at Southwark Crown Court in London for the start of his trial on multiple charges including rape and sexual assault.
Accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher, the comedian and actor arrived at the central London courthouse wearing a grey suit and sunglasses according to reporting from Variety. Brand waited briefly in his black Mercedes before walking into the building hand-in-hand with his wife, declining to answer shouted questions from reporters as detailed by the Independent.
Judge Oversees Jury Selection at Southwark Crown Court
High Court judge Mr Justice Bennathan oversaw the opening proceedings inside the courtroom. The initial task centered on selecting the 12 jurors who will decide the outcome of the case.
A panel of 50 prospective jurors was questioned at the outset. The judge asked whether any potential jurors remembered a Channel 4 television documentary or a long article in The Times newspaper published approximately three years prior that detailed allegations against the defendant.
Six members of the prospective jury panel raised their hands and were subsequently dismissed from service. The jury selection process was scheduled to continue, with the trial expected to last up to 10 weeks at Southwark Crown Court, while other scheduling notes indicated the opening statements from the prosecution and defense were tentatively set for Wednesday.
Crown Prosecution Service Files Seven Charges
Brand faces three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault, and one allegation of indecent assault. These criminal counts involve six female complainants and stem from an investigation conducted by the Metropolitan Police.
The charges were formally brought by the Crown Prosecution Service across two separate decisions in April and December of the previous year. The initial filings covered four women with alleged offenses occurring between 1999 and 2005, while subsequent charges added in December involved two additional women concerning incidents in 2009 as reported by Variety.
Previous pre-trial hearings outlined specific accusations, including an alleged rape in a hotel room during a political party conference, a workplace incident involving forced sexual acts, and separate allegations of kissing and groping according to coverage from the Independent. Brand has maintained his innocence throughout, pleading not guilty during earlier court appearances while remaining on bail under the oversight of the court.

Police Launch Inquiries Following Media Broadcasts
Law enforcement inquiries into the comedian began following investigative reports broadcast by Channel 4’s Dispatches and published in The Sunday Times in September 2023.
“We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4, Sunday Times and Times investigation in September 2023, We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.”

Defendant Transitions From Broadcasting to Podcasting
The trial brings renewed attention to a career that spanned British broadcasting and Hollywood film productions during the 2000s and early 2010s. Rising to prominence as a stand-up comedian, Brand gained widespread recognition hosting Big Brother’s Big Mouth on Channel 4 before presenting major industry events including the Brit Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards alongside his work on BBC Radio 2.
He later transitioned into American cinema, securing roles in studio comedies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In recent years, Brand stepped away from mainstream broadcasting to build a following as an online podcaster and digital influencer while also undergoing baptism and turning toward Christian teachings.
