Jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles can now run original PlayStation 2 game discs through the PS5SX2 emulator. Following a series of updates in October 2026, users can dump games directly from physical media to their console’s storage, bypassing the need for digital downloads while expanding support to external USB optical drives.
Disc Support via PS5SX2 Version 2.01
The latest functionality, introduced by lead coder Sword in PS5SX2 version 2.01, marks a significant shift for the homebrew community. While users previously relied on digital ROM files to emulate classic titles, the emulator now allows the console to read and copy data directly from physical PS2 discs. According to the developer’s release notes on GitHub, the software automatically dumps it if not already dumped and launches the game
once a disc is inserted into the tray.
This capability extends to the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition as well. The process requires an initial dump of the game, after which the emulator handles the title as a stored file. While the console’s drive reads the file structure on the fly, Sword clarified to users that each game must be dumped once before it runs from the disc.
Hardware Restrictions Prevent Older Disc Playback
Despite the breakthrough, the feature is bound by strict hardware limitations. The PS5’s internal optical drive cannot read CDs. This means that blue-tinted PS2 discs—and by extension, original PlayStation 1 games—remain incompatible with this update.

Access is restricted to specific firmware versions. Android Authority explains that the current emulation ecosystem is built upon the Relapse exploit, which is compatible only with consoles running system software version 13.60 or earlier, released in July 2026. Users who have updated to version 14.xx remain unable to execute the homebrew applications required to run the emulator.
Emulator Updates Boost Frame Rates and Visual Quality
The PS5SX2 emulator, which is a native port of the PC-based PCSX2 using a modified Vulkan driver, has rapidly expanded its feature set since its September 2026 release. Version 2.00 introduced built-in frame generation, allowing 30 FPS titles to reach 60 FPS, and 60 FPS titles to hit 120 FPS. As detailed in the PS5SX2 version 2.02 patch notes, the subsequent update added CRT, VHS, and scanline filters, alongside a God of War II preset. On high-end hardware like the PS5 Pro, the emulator can scale rendering up to 8x resolution to improve visual clarity on modern 4K displays.
The development team is already looking toward the next generation of legacy hardware. Sword has confirmed on X and their Discord server that a PS3 disc emulator is in the works. While Sony has not commented on these unofficial modifications, the company has previously announced plans to cease the production of physical discs for new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028.
