Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there are strong indications Iran played a role in an incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire where five men were arrested in a terror investigation, following similar statements from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The unfolding security situation centers on a rural location near RAF Fairford, an airbase used by US planes for missions against Iran. Five men in their 20s, all UK nationals from London, were arrested in the early hours of a Sunday morning after a local woman driving home noticed suspicious vehicles and men in masks, prompting a call to police. It later emerged that one of the suspects had dialed 999 himself before the group was taken into custody.
Police Examination of the Seized Vans and the Decision on Bail
Assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor, the head of counter-terrorism policing, confirmed that forensic experts and military assets examined three vans belonging to the suspects. Investigators recovered a quantity of petrol but no improvised explosive devices during the operation. After initial arrests on explosives charges and subsequent questioning for preparing acts of terrorism, authorities released all five men on police bail on Monday.

The release sparked immediate friction with Washington. President Donald Trump told reporters he was surprised by the decision, stating: I will tell you, I would have said, ‘don’t let them have bail’. I’m surprised that they released them. I wouldn’t have done that.
I’m just disappointed that they caught terrorists — they did a good job, and then they sort of let them go. How do you give bail to a terrorist?

Prime Minister Burnham pushed back against the criticism, explaining that the investigative decision was grounded in experience and strategy. He emphasized that the suspects faced the strictest possible bail conditions and that British authorities maintained the strongest grip and closest control over the situation.
International Disclosures and Diplomatic Alignment
While British officials initially held back specific foreign attribution, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Monday that the incident clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor. In an interview with Fox News, Rubio connected the event to broader regional tensions, saying: I think it ties us to the reality here, and that is we are dealing with elements in the world, and in the case of Iran, for example, who have openly threatened to attack American interests globally.
By Wednesday, Burnham confirmed the government’s assessment during an interview with the BBC. We will say more in due course but we can confirm… that we believe Iran to have played a part,
he told the network, adding that the administration had been communicating with American counterparts all week to explain handling procedures.
Operational History at RAF Fairford and the Iranian Response
The airbase in Gloucestershire has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for decades. In recent months, US bombers have launched missions from the facility toward the Middle East after the UK approved American requests for defensive strikes against Iran. Earlier this year, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a warning through the semiofficial Tasnim news agency, stating that any base facilitating aggression against Iranian territory is considered a legitimate target, specifically citing bomber flights taking off from Fairford.
Despite the statements from London and Washington, the Iranian embassy in London released a statement declaring that it categorically rejects and strongly condemns any unfounded and malicious speculations linking Tehran to the Gloucestershire incident.
