Rescue crews in Cairo completed a 10-hour search following the collapse of a residential building in the Hadayek al-Qobbah district. The tragedy left six people dead and seven injured, with authorities launching an engineering probe into the structure’s 1950s origins.
The disaster unfolded in the capital’s Hadayek al-Qobbah neighborhood, where a multi-story residential structure collapsed on Tuesday, plunging families into emergency response operations that lasted through the night and into Wednesday.
The building, constructed in the 1950s with load-bearing walls, stood four to five stories high across ground and upper levels before giving way entirely.

Rescue Operations and the Toll at Abdel Ghaffar Alley
Civil protection forces pulled seven injured survivors from the rubble during extensive operations, transporting them for urgent medical care. Among those injured was 38-year-old Omnia, who was extracted and placed in an intensive care unit in critical condition after losing multiple family members under the collapsed masonry.
The final death toll reached six fatalities, including three children. The local Directorate of Education confirmed the deaths of two students from El-Shaheed Alaa El-Asi School: Amr Ahmed Hassan, a fifth-grader, and his brother Ammar Ahmed Hassan, an eighth-grader attending the same institution.
Prosecutors Authorize Burials as Investigators Examine Collapse Victims
Security cordons were established around the perimeter while neighboring properties were evacuated as an exhaustive precaution, with utilities including gas, electricity, and water temporarily cut off.
Public prosecutors authorized the burial of the six victims following the completion of forensic medical examinations. Investigators also ordered forensic checks on the remains of the property’s owner, Gamal Hussein, to establish whether his death resulted directly from the structural collapse or secondary complications underneath the wreckage.
Engineering Committees Assess Aging Infrastructure Risks
The governorate formed a specialized engineering committee tasked with examining the structural integrity of adjacent buildings and reviewing the collapse site’s history to determine primary triggers. Local reports indicate that the structure suffered from advanced deterioration due to its 1950s construction date, reflecting broader structural vulnerabilities across Egypt’s older, densely populated urban quarters where regular maintenance is frequently lacking under legacy rental frameworks.
