However, the chatbot quickly contradicted several key claims made by the administration, including acknowledging that Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the 2020 presidential election.

The Launch of America.gov and its Technological Architecture

President Donald Trump unveiled America.gov on Tuesday as a single digital front door intended to give citizens a centralized place to access government services and information. The platform is designed to allow users to sign in, communicate in plain language, receive accurate answers, and complete government transactions without navigating multiple federal agencies.

The platform relies on a massive backend infrastructure. According to the White House, the site draws information from 29,000 government websites. U.S. chief design officer Joe Gebbia helped oversee the development of the portal, which is powered by AI technology from Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok. During the Washington, D.C., rollout event, Trump also signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to integrate their public-facing services with the new platform, alongside a directive instructing government documents to refer to super intelligence or “SI” rather than artificial intelligence or “AI” in the future.

Contradictory Answers on the 2020 Election and Economic Claims

Despite being built to serve as the administration’s official digital voice, the chatbot immediately began delivering responses that ran directly counter to statements made by the president. When a user asked who won the race, America.gov provided a clear answer citing official records.

Beyond the 2020 election results, the portal’s reliance on official data sources led it to push back against several high-profile economic assertions. When questioned about recent administration statements regarding the economy, America.gov stated that no official U.S. statistical agency ranks the current economic conditions as the best ever. The site noted that unemployment had dipped lower during other periods, such as approximately 3.5% in 2022, and that GDP growth had been faster in multiple past quarters.

The chatbot similarly addressed claims regarding foreign investment and consumer prices. While Trump frequently boasts of securing upwards of $21 trillion in foreign investment during his second term, the portal reported that no official source confirms that figure, noting that White House data sits closer to $11 trillion and includes uncompleted deals and company pledges over several years. On grocery costs, the portal bluntly contradicted claims that prices had dropped significantly compared to the previous administration, pointing instead to official Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Restricted Queries Following Immediate Revisions

The transparency was short-lived. While Trump was still speaking at Tuesday’s launch event, the platform began refusing to answer questions about the 2020 election outcome. According to coverage from the Associated Press, the chatbot shifted its response to state that it could not answer political questions.

The swift adjustments extended beyond the election. America.gov quickly implemented restrictions on other contentious subjects, beginning to decline inquiries regarding whether Trump had been impeached or convicted of felony charges. Prior to these changes, the system had also contradicted Trump on crowd size comparisons between Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration and Trump’s 2017 inauguration, affirming that the 2009 event drew a larger crowd. It remains unclear how the platform will balance its mandate to pull exclusively from official government databases with queries touching on politically sensitive topics.
