Military Escalation Between the United States and Iran Triggers Regional Alerts
Military tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply, following a series of American strikes on Iranian sites and retaliatory attacks by Iranian forces against regional installations. The confrontation, which has persisted 138 days after the outbreak of conflict and 29 days after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran, has spread across the Gulf and into Jordan.

The U.S. Central Command announced it has launched multiple waves of strikes against Iran. According to the U.S. military, these operations are designed to limit Tehran’s ability to threaten ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes, which began at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (19:00 GMT), targeted Iranian military capabilities, extending from the port of Chabahar in southeastern Iran to the city of Omidieh in the Khuzestan province in the southwest.

Tehran maintains that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until Washington accepts what it terms the “Iranian legal system” in the waterway. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared that the reopening of the strait is strictly conditioned on the cessation of U.S. military aggression in the region. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the Islamic Republic will defend every inch of its territory with all its power and will respond to its enemies. Furthermore, the Khatam al-Anbiya military headquarters asserted that Iran would provide a decisive response to any U.S. aggression, emphasizing it will not allow the United States to interfere in or manage the Strait of Hormuz.
Targeting U.S. Assets in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan
The Iranian military has officially disclosed details of its “Operation Lightning,” with the Iranian state news agency IRNA reporting that the tenth round of these operations targeted U.S. military installations. The Iranian military stated it targeted radar and defense systems, including Patriot missile batteries, at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. Additionally, Iran claimed that drones targeted aircraft hangars at the Azraq Air Base in Jordan, a facility that houses U.S. F-18 fighter jets.

In Kuwait, the military issued a statement on Thursday confirming that its air defenses were actively engaging “hostile” drones originating from Iran. Colonel Saud Al-Atwan, the spokesperson for the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense, reported that on Wednesday, the armed forces detected four guided missiles and 21 hostile drones within the country’s airspace, noting that they were intercepted and handled. While the strikes caused material damage to vital facilities, the Ministry reported no human casualties. Kuwaiti Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Al-Sabah visited naval sites to assess the situation and ensure the readiness of the forces.

In Bahrain, the Ministry of Interior triggered sirens and urged citizens and residents to remain calm and move to the nearest safe location. The Bahraini military reported it was responding to new air strikes, while the IRGC claimed it had specifically targeted installations belonging to the U.S. Fifth Fleet in the country.
