Yemeni Government Forces Claim 468 Strikes Against Houthi Positions

Yemeni government forces launched a military counter-offensive against Houthi positions, carrying out hundreds of airstrikes and ground engagements across Taiz and surrounding provinces following an escalation of multi-axis attacks by the group.

The military escalation across multiple frontlines intensified as government forces and allied popular resistance units engaged in heavy combat against Houthi fighters in Taiz, Yemen’s second-largest city. According to official military statements, operations spanned at least a dozen active combat zones as forces sought to halt coordinated advances by the group. This military escalation began in July 2026, marking the most expansive surge in hostilities since the truce brokered in April 2022. The conflict in Yemen has persisted since the group seized control of Sanaa and multiple governorates in September 2014, preceding the intervention of an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Government Forces Strike Dozens of Frontline Targets

Government operations combined heavy artillery, missile strikes, and air support to blunt Houthi movements. The military reported executing 474 strikes and targeted operations over a 24-hour period, utilizing warplanes, armed drones, artillery, and rocket launchers.

The aerial and ground campaigns struck command centers, weapon depots, supply lines, and vehicle concentrations in multiple districts. Official statements detailing wave after wave of airstrikes highlighted targets in Hammir, Bani Bakari, Sameh, al-Aqroudh, and the northern 60th Street sector, alongside positions in Midi and Bani Hasan in Hajjah, and subsequent waves striking al-Radaa, al-Kadha, Mount Noman, al-Ajram, and al-Marzam, according to the official spokesperson of the Yemeni Armed Forces, Colonel Majid Al-Nuwaizi. Ground clashes simultaneously forced retreating Houthi units back across rural sectors in Jabal Habashi, Maqbana, and al-Maseerakh, while officials stated that forces continue to handle Houthi attacks efficiently, adeptly, and with high morale.

Interior Ministry Confirms Senior Commander Death

The renewed fighting carried a heavy toll for security forces. The Yemeni Ministry of Interior confirmed the death of Major General Mohammed Salem Abdullah al-Kholani, chief of staff of the emergency forces, who was killed while performing his national duty in the al-Kadha frontline. The Minister of Interior, Major General Ibrahim Ali Haidan, sent a cable of condolence regarding his death.

Authorities ordered the closure of approximately 19 key roads connecting Taiz to surrounding districts and the western coast. Government advisories cautioned drivers and civilians against using transit routes spanning from the Sanaa-Dhamar-Ibb corridor through to al-Hawban and al-Kadha, citing their active use by combatants for military logistics.

Houthi Drone Attacks Expand Regional Hostilities

The escalation extended beyond Taiz’s immediate perimeter. Military spokespersons reported intercepting explosive drones targeting Aden and destroying a mobile air defense system in Mocha developed with assistance from foreign experts. Saudi authorities confirmed a separate Houthi attack struck an electrical distribution station in Medina.

International observers warned that the expanding hostilities continue to compound an already severe humanitarian crisis. United Nations figures and relief agencies noted that recent fighting has displaced a number of people, while a portion of the population across Yemen faces acute food insecurity, including millions of children suffering from varying levels of malnutrition, mirroring conditions recorded since the September 2014 outbreak of the conflict.
