Samsung Unveils Passport-Sized Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ahead of Apple Competition
Samsung Electronics on Wednesday unveiled three new foldable smartphones at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London, introducing a redesigned, passport-sized model called the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The new device represents the biggest physical change to Samsung’s book-shaped phone in years, shifting from a taller build to a shorter, wider form factor with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,900 (or $1,899 depending on the market) and sits alongside two other new devices: the higher-end Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, priced at $2,099 (or about $2,100), and the clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 8, starting at $1,199. According to sources, Samsung raised the prices of the Ultra and Flip models by $100 compared to their predecessors. Drew Blackard, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product management, told CNN that the company hopes the new lineup will appeal to a broader audience as the market braces for Apple’s expected entry into the foldable space.
Design, Dimensions, and Display Specifications
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is marketed as Samsung’s lightest Galaxy Fold device, weighing in at 201 grams. It measures 4.5mm thick when open and 9.7mm when closed. The squarish, passport-sized device features a 5.5-inch cover display intended for everyday tasks like texting and checking email, while the 7.6-inch inner display offers more versatility for reading, scrolling, and watching video content. Unlike older Z Fold models that left large black bars at the top and bottom of standard video clips, the 4:3 aspect ratio of the Z Fold 8 is optimized for both horizontal and vertical media. Unfolded, the layout is designed to support horizontal video viewing, landscape multitasking, and portrait-oriented applications. The device comes equipped with two 50-megapixel rear cameras (omitting a telephoto lens) and packs a 4,800-mAh battery supporting 45-watt wired and 20-watt wireless charging.
Market Pressures, Pricing, and the Apple Factor
Samsung’s strategic product shift comes at a critical time for the mobile industry. Analysts and executives noted that Apple is widely expected to release its first foldable iPhone later in the year, potentially during its annual September event. While foldable devices currently represent a small slice of the overall smartphone market, industry watchers suggest that Apple’s entry could bring vital mainstream legitimacy and attention to the category.
At the same time, Samsung is grappling with rising component costs, particularly memory chips, which have been squeezed by high demand from the AI industry and supply shortages. Memory and storage account for significant material costs in mobile devices. Industry analysts observed that while top-tier pricing allows manufacturers more room to absorb these cost increases at the high end, the price tags—ranging from $1,200 up to over $2,000—remain a central talking point for consumers and market researchers alike.
Samsung’s Three-Tiered Foldable Lineup
The introduction of the passport-sized Z Fold 8 expands Samsung’s foldable strategy from two devices to three distinct tiers. While past iterations primarily targeted early adopters and business users focused on productivity, the Z Fold 8 is tailored for general entertainment tasks.
