The annual Perseid summer light show is back and is set to peak overnight on Wednesday, Aug. 12 into Thursday, Aug. 13, coinciding with a total solar eclipse, according to apnews.com. Labeled by AOL as the best meteor shower of the year by NASA, the celestial event unfolds alongside a new moon phase, ensuring dark skies free from bright moonlight that could otherwise overpower fainter meteors.

The meteor shower shares its peak date with a total solar eclipse visible across parts of Europe, Asia, Canada, Spain, Iceland, and Greenland, alongside a six-planet parade. Skywatchers positioned in the path of totality may catch a glimpse of the Perseids during the roughly two minutes spent in the moon’s shadow, though the best time to view the fireballs generally comes after totality.

Origins of the Cosmic Debris Stream

Meteor showers occur predictably every year when the Earth sails through trails of dust and debris left behind by comets and asteroids. For the Perseids, those remnants originate from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, an unusually large icy ball measuring about 16 miles across that orbits the sun every 133 years and is not scheduled to return until 2125. Observations of this specific meteor shower date back over 2,000 years, and the active period spans from mid-July through late August.

When those high-speed fragments collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, they disintegrate to produce brilliant streaks of light known as shooting stars. The Perseids are a perennial favorite among casual stargazers and seasoned sky-watchers because they frequently produce fast, bright fireballs and long wakes of light and color. Furthermore, summer temperatures allow observers to enjoy the show without suffering through a cold winter night.

Expected Rates and Viewing Conditions

Under ideal conditions, the shower has a theoretical maximum rate of 50 to 100 meteors per hour, according to NASA. Meanwhile, the American Meteor Society estimates that viewers located in rural regions are more likely to see approximately 30 to 50 Perseids per hour during the maximum. Those who miss the peak can still catch Perseid meteors until around August 24.

Viewing conditions are enhanced significantly this year by the new moon phase. The moon is beautiful, but it's such a diva, said astronomer Aparna Venkatesan with the University of San Francisco, noting that a new moon means no moonlight floods the sky, allowing observers to see significantly more meteors.

How to Watch the Perseids

To spot the meteors, experts recommend heading outside after dark to a safe location away from clouds and city lights. For those not situated in the solar eclipse path, the greatest visibility tends to be in the pre-dawn hours, specifically between midnight and dawn, when the constellation Perseus is high in the northern sky and the meteors appear to radiate from it.

Observers should give their eyes about half an hour to adjust to the darkness and avoid looking at their phones. Zach Vanderbosch, an astronomer with the McDonald Observatory in Texas, recommends picking a patch of sky to focus on until a quick, bright streak passes by, even in peripheral vision. There's just something magical about it, Vanderbosch said.
