The European Space Agency (ESA) is broadcasting live from the Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre in Teruel, Spain, with coverage hosted by space scientist Maggie Aderin alongside ESA Director of Science Carole Mundell. Meanwhile, NASA’s live feed launches with coverage preceding totality in Iceland and Spain. NASA’s broadcast highlights ongoing research experiments designed to reveal more about the sun, eclipses, and Earth’s atmosphere. Viewers tuning in can watch dedicated feeds capturing the rare view of the sun’s corona—an ethereal outer atmosphere of the sun normally hidden by blinding daylight.

High-Altitude Jets and Balloon Fleets Measure Atmospheric Shocks

Beyond public broadcasts, researchers are aggressively utilizing the rare alignment to study atmospheric impacts. Supported by NASA, the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project has deployed students to launch 80 scientific balloons in Iceland and six in Spain equipped with various instruments and cameras to measure how the moon’s cold, dark shadow affects the atmosphere, as reported by Smithsonianmag.

In the air, another NASA-funded team is actively chasing totality aboard a WB-57 high-altitude jet. This year’s eclipse offers starkly contrasting visual spectacles depending on geographic coordinates. In northern Greenland, the eclipse intersects the season of the midnight sun, bringing two minutes of totality and a rare glimpse of stars amidst around-the-clock daylight. Conversely, select locations in Spain experience the event late in the evening, granting observers a view of totality just before sunset.

Museums and astronomical organizations are also sharing the spectacle globally. The Exploratorium, a science and art museum based in San Francisco, streams live views from Villalibado, Spain, integrated into a broadcast by the Virtual Telescope Project alongside partial eclipse views from Manciano, Italy. Concurrently, the astronomy site Time and Date kicks off continuous coverage hosted by journalist Anne Buckle and astrophysicist Graham Jones, bouncing between multiple vantage points inside the narrow 5,157-mile path.
