In Iceland, daylight turned to complete darkness across the westernmost coastline after clouds briefly cleared to reveal the event. A witness told Reuters that a cheer went up from a crowd gathered in front of Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik during the blackout, according to The Independent. The period of totality was projected to last under two and a half minutes, peaking off Iceland’s western coast.

Space agencies and scientific teams mobilized instrumentation to study the atmospheric effects of the sudden darkness and cooling.
