Although the pool is home to both species, detailed anatomical examinations, high-resolution CT scans, and genetic sequencing revealed that the two creatures are not close relatives. Biologists identified distinct skeletal structures and found that the demon cavefish carries a nonfunctional light-sensing rhodopsin gene.

The shared physical traits are the result of convergent evolution, as both unrelated lineages independently lost their eyes and pigmentation millions of years apart after finding separate paths into the underground world. Because the subterranean environment sculpted nearly identical outward appearances, generations of field surveyors lumped the two look-alike species together during routine population checks. This is the part I find most remarkable, Niemiller said, according to the nypost.com, adding that the fish found its own separate way into the underground world and lost its eyes and pigment independently, millions of years apart.

Vulnerability and Conservation Challenges in North Alabama

North Alabama boasts some of the richest cave networks in North America, but subterranean biodiversity faces high stakes. Because the newly discovered demon cavefish is currently known from only a single cave and its connected aquifer, researchers consider it highly vulnerable to environmental shifts. While the restricted-access military base protects the site from direct surface disturbance, the species remains exposed to external threats originating across the surrounding surface recharge basin.

Groundwater links the surface directly to the cave pools, meaning that agricultural runoff, chemical contaminants, surface sediment, and fluctuations in water level can reach the habitat from miles away. Safeguarding such rare, cryptic species requires protecting entire recharge basins to ensure that subterranean waters remain clean. The findings from UAH researchers and collaborators from three other regional universities were published in Scientific Reports, emphasizing that much of the region’s subterranean biodiversity remains undocumented.
