The Cinematic Success of Saqr and Kanaria
The action-comedy Saqr and Kanaria has become a standout success of the 2026 summer film season in Egypt, crossing a major box office mark at the Egyptian pound level. Following this significant commercial performance, lead actor Mohamed Imam has confirmed plans for a sequel to capitalize on the project’s momentum.

Box Office Performance and Critical Reception
The film Saqr and Kanaria has established itself as a dominant force in the 2026 summer circuit, driven largely by the on-screen chemistry between stars Mohamed Imam and Shiko. Industry observers note that the film’s blend of action and comedy—genres that traditionally draw high theater attendance—has resonated with audiences. The film represents a distinct shift for Shiko, who is known for comedic roles but here takes on a larger volume of action sequences, adding a new dimension to his performance that has captured audience curiosity.
According to reporting, the film’s earnings surpassed significant figures, placing it among the highest-grossing productions in the history of Egyptian cinema. This achievement places the title in the company of major seasonal hits, though it currently trails behind the record set by Welad Rizk 3. Prior to this milestone, the film had already recorded 76 million Egyptian pounds in revenue against sales of more than 327,000 tickets.
Plot Dynamics and Character Roles
The narrative follows Saqr, played by Mohamed Imam, who decides to distance himself from the world of gangs and danger in search of a stable life. His plans shift after he meets Bilal, played by Shiko—a writer obsessed with the world of espionage and adventure. Their meeting triggers a series of unexpected situations that upend their lives. In the film’s narrative, Saqr enters into a love relationship with a fashion designer, while Bilal is married to a cosmetic surgeon, played by Yousra El Lozy. The cast also includes Yara El Sokkary, who portrays the fashion designer and Saqr’s love interest, while Khaled El Sawy appears as a special operations officer battling terrorism. The family dynamic is rounded out by the character played by Entessar, the mother of the characters portrayed by El Lozy and El Sokkary.
As detailed in reports, the film features a substantial supporting cast including Ahmed El Azar and Wael Awny, along with guest appearances by Diab, Mahmoud Abdel Moghni, Nesreen Amin, and the Lebanese actor Bassem Moughnieh. The film is directed by Hussein El Menbawy, written by Ayman Wattar, and produced by Louay Abdullah and Wael Abdullah.
Sequel Development and Creative Chemistry
Following the film’s success, Mohamed Imam confirmed in an interview with host Amr Adib on the program Al-Hekaya that a second installment is in development. Imam characterized the decision as a direct response to the successful creative partnership he shared with Shiko.

This desire comes as a direct investment in the state of great success and exceptional artistic chemistry that brought me together with the artist Shiko, said Mohamed Imam. I see that the comedic harmony and joint performance with Shiko are an exciting opportunity to provide a new cinematic adventure that exceeds in its success the first part of Saqr and Kanaria.
Mohamed Imam’s Broader Production Slate
The move to greenlight a sequel for Saqr and Kanaria reflects a wider trend in Imam’s current production schedule, which leans heavily into established properties. Beyond this, Imam is involved in the revival of the 35-year-old classic Shams El Zanaty. The new project, titled Al-Bidayah (The Beginning), explores the events occurring 15 years prior to the original film. Despite production crises and delays over two and a half years, director Ahmed Khaled Mousa is currently leading final preparations for filming to resume in late July. The cast includes Yasmine Raeis, Bassem Samra, Mohamed Tharwat, Mahmoud Abdel Moghni, Khaled Anwar, Ahmed Khaled Saleh, and Ahmed Abdel Hamid, with a script by Mohamed El Dabbah.

Additionally, the production company announced a sequel to the 2022 film Ammhom, citing the project’s strong performance both domestically and internationally. That film, which starred Imam alongside Aytan Amer, Hoda El Mufti, Bassem Samra, Mohamed Tharwat, Sayed Ragab, Mohamed Lotfy, Ahmed Khaled Saleh, Riad El Khouly, and El Shahat Mabrouk, was written by Wissam Sabry, produced by Ahmed El Sobky, and directed by Hussein El Menbawy.
Transition to Theater
While maintaining his cinematic output, Imam is preparing for a shift into live performance for the first time in his career. He is currently rehearsing for a play titled Prince of the World, which is slated for inclusion in the upcoming Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia. The production, authored by Mostafa Basit and directed by Nader Salah El-Din, features a cast of prominent artists and is intended to tour across Egyptian theaters and other Arab nations following its initial run.
