Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture is launching the Quarter Tone exhibition at the Fenaa Alawwal center in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, running from October through November 2026. Conceived by Iraqi musician Naseer Shamma, the showcase transforms discarded oud-making wood shavings into visual artworks that explore the bridge between sound and plastic arts.

Exhibition Concept: Turning Oud Remnants Into Visual Rhythm

The upcoming exhibition explores the deep intersection between musical tones and visual arts. Running until November 7, 2026, the project translates sonic frequencies and Middle Eastern musical modes into tangible visual pieces.

The central creative vision belongs to world-renowned Iraqi musician Naseer Shamma, known for his work with the oud. Instead of discarding the waste materials produced during instrument manufacturing, Shamma recycles wood shavings and remnants into abstract sculptural formations.

These silent materials shift from traditional functions into ciphers for sound, maqam, and rhythm. The name itself derives from quarter tone, a defining element of Arabic and Eastern music that separates notes by intervals smaller than a semitone.

Cultural Programming, Dates, and Free Access at Fenaa Alawwal

Beyond the gallery installations, the Ministry of Culture has scheduled an extensive schedule of accompanying cultural events. Visitors can participate in dialogue sessions featuring artists and researchers examining how sound interacts with space, memory, and identity.

Strategic Goals Under Vision 2030
