Taylor Swift made MTV Video Music Awards history on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, by receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, breaking her tie with Beyoncé to become the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history with 31 career wins.

Behind the Camera: The New Award and Milestone Wins
The newly minted Artist Director Honors was introduced to celebrate music artists who have developed a distinct directorial voice and expanded the possibilities of music video storytelling. Swift became the first-ever recipient of the award, which pushed her total to 31 wins before factoring in the rest of the evening’s competitive categories.
Reflecting on her career during her acceptance speech, Swift noted that she began making music videos two decades ago. She shared that she has been involved in producing roughly 60 music videos, having written and directed 18 of them. Swift later added to her tally by winning Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia
from her album The Life of a Showgirl,
as well as securing the prize for best direction, bringing her cumulative total to 33 wins.
She dedicated her Video of the Year win to the late Dolly Parton, whom she described as the ultimate showgirl.
A Star-Studded Premiere and Live CBS Broadcast
Beyond accepting trophies, Swift used the two-hour broadcast — which aired live on CBS from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles — to debut the music video for her new song, Patient Zero.
Swift directed the visual project herself, which features Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson portraying mirror images of each other. The release marks her first single since her July marriage to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.

Madonna Opens the Show and Joins a Starry Winner’s Circle
The evening kicked off with Madonna taking the stage alongside collaborator Sabrina Carpenter to perform her 2026 single, Bring Your Love.
Madonna and Carpenter later won the award for best collaboration for the track.
Madonna also collected trophies for artist of the year and best dance, anchoring a night hosted by Snoop Dogg and featuring performances from Shaboozey, RAYE, and Yung Lean.
