Congo’s Ebola epidemic has surpassed 8,000 recorded cases and 4,000 deaths, driven by a vaccine-resistant strain, community mistrust, and violent disruptions that recently destroyed a transit center and displaced thousands of people in Ituri province.

Ebola Outbreak Reaches 8,300 Cases in Congo

Public health institute data put the cumulative toll at 8,067 cases and 3,901 deaths, translating to a 48.4 percent fatality rate according to government figures as the Democratic Republic of the Congo faces its 17th and fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history.

By early Thursday, updated numbers released by the Ministry of Health recorded 8,300 cases and 4,018 deaths as authorities struggled to contain the virus. Across the affected region, more than 2,000 patients have successfully recovered from the disease, according to reporting noted by the Reuters news agency. The outbreak has entrenched itself across seven provinces, specifically Bas-Uele, Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, South Ubangi, and Tshopo. The World Health Organization warns that too many patients continue to die in communities rather than seeking care early at specialized centers, a delay that sustains household and neighborhood transmission throughout the affected zones.

The World Health Organization has noted that confirmed cases fell from an average of roughly 850 cases and 470 deaths per week in mid-July down to an average of about 490 cases and 230 deaths weekly by September. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that while confirmed infections have dropped, the decline could be driven by persistent insecurity and operational challenges in securing community cooperation across various hotspots.

Security Raid Destroys Transit Facility in Ituri

Soldiers entered the Kigonze displacement camp on the outskirts of Bunia to search for weapons, triggering clashes that forced approximately 19,000 residents to flee over the past week and leaving the camp entirely abandoned, which severely damaged the medical response in Ituri province.

During the security sweep, an Ebola transit facility located within the camp was burned down. The International Organization for Migration reported that fatality rates inside displacement camps can exceed 80 percent, a figure far higher than the overall average of around 50 percent, fueled by severe overcrowding and poor sanitary conditions.

“It’s been a huge struggle to create Ebola transit centres [and] Ebola treatment centres; it’s required money, bringing in staff and it’s been a struggle all across the east. So, when we lose a centre, that means we lose capacity, we lose investment and we have to start again. And above all, it means that people do not get access to the care that they really need.”

Agencies note that about 1,000 active Ebola contacts were originally sheltered inside the Kigonze site, but only about a fifth of them have been successfully traced following the mass displacement that emptied the camp. The UN refugee agency also reported that across various Congolese displacement sites, there have been at least 88 confirmed Ebola cases and 56 deaths, totals that officials believe are likely underestimates.

Health Workers Strike as Vaccine Shortages Hit Tshopo

Health workers stationed at the Ituri epicenter staged demonstrations to protest months of unpaid wages, waving placards declaring No money, no data! and No payment for months. Surveillance and medical teams have launched multiple strikes throughout the epidemic to demand back pay for August and September, with protesters like Biongi Beiza in Bunia voicing frustration over the lack of administrative explanation.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization noted that safe and dignified burial teams expanded from 53 teams of 12 members up to 114 deployed teams across Ituri province, though an estimated 1,400 additional health professionals remain urgently needed.

The outbreak stems from the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved therapeutics or commercial vaccines exist though experimental vaccines are trialed. Authorities highlighted a complete stock shortage of experimental vaccines in northeastern Tshopo province, alongside treatment capacity bottlenecks in Ituri health facilities.

Community resistance and deep-seated political mistrust continue to hinder containment as some residents dismiss the epidemic as a hoax. Marie-Célestin Karondwa, acting president of the UDPS party’s federal executive committee in Butembo, was beaten to death by residents in Butembo after appearing on radio to defend government prevention policies.

Global Leaders Pledge Funds While Aid Worker Evacuated

Global leaders at the G20 summit in New York committed $2.9 billion to fight the epidemic, while the United States released an additional $267 million toward response efforts. Regional agency Africa CDC stressed that this mobilization must translate rapidly into field disbursements to impact affected communities.

Médecins Sans Frontières announced that an aid worker was infected with the virus while deployed in Congo and was evacuated on a special flight to the Netherlands. The patient was admitted to a high-level isolation unit at the Leiden University Medical Center late Thursday night.
