10 Oklahoma Tribes Negotiate Federal Energy Grants

Oklahoma Tribes Secure Federal Funding for Energy Projects

Ten Oklahoma-based tribes are currently discussing a share of federal grants aimed at supporting energy projects, part of a national initiative announced last week by the Department of Energy’s Office of Indian Energy.

The federal agency selected 63 tribe-led projects nationwide for grant negotiation, according to the Department of Energy. While detailed operational plans for many of the individual proposals remain limited, the specific grant titles released by the office offer a few clues.

The Cherokee Nation plans to utilize its prospective funding to develop independent energy audits and standards. Meanwhile, the Pawnee Nation is evaluating the feasibility of installing a community-scale microgrid, and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation has earmarked its grant for a feasibility study centered on data center development.

Among the largest awards in this state-specific funding batch is a grant exceeding $7 million awarded to the Chickasaw Nation.

“The grant will be utilized to strengthen energy infrastructure and the sustainability of healthcare facilities on the Chickasaw Nation Ada South Campus, where the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center is located,” Governor Chris Anoatubby said in a statement.

According to tribal leadership, the investment is designed to enhance the reliability of critical infrastructure systems while simultaneously generating long-term operational savings and increased energy resiliency for the medical center and surrounding facilities.

A Historic Investment in Tribal Energy

The ongoing talks represent an important milestone for federal tribal energy funding. Office of Indian Energy Director Eric Mahroum noted in a statement that this announcement constitutes the largest-ever single investment in tribal energy development in the office’s 20-year history.

Federal officials confirmed that this funding cycle marks the first time the office has opened grant awards to projects at any phase of development. Additional details regarding the selections can be found in the Office of Indian Energy selections portal.
