Augustine Melvin Glass Jr., known to his friends and family as Gus, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the age of 80, following a courageous battle with declining health, according to an obituary published by Harris Funeral Home on Legacy.
Born on November 7, 1945, to Augustine Melvin Glass Sr. and Leumetta Virginia (Morris) Glass, Gus built a life defined by quiet dependability, fierce athletic determination, and a deep-rooted love for his family and community. According to Legacy, he went to Captain Jack High School in Mount Union, Pennsylvania, where he successfully completed his studies and proudly graduated alongside his Class of 1964 peers. During those high school years, he made his mark as an outstanding athlete, earning recognition as the Pennsylvania State Wrestling Runner-Up—a testament to the discipline and competitive spirit that would characterize the rest of his days.
A Career on the Rails and a Life of Creation
After finishing school, Gus explored several different paths before finding his professional home with Amtrak. He built a long, steady career there, faithfully serving until his retirement in 2008. Colleagues and friends knew him as a man of formidable work ethic who showed up when it mattered and took genuine pride in doing a job right.
That same hands-on determination extended far beyond the railroad. Outside of work, Gus was a consummate creator. Whether he was constructing, laying concrete, building, or repairing practically anything, his skills were always at the ready. If someone in his orbit needed a hand, the solution was usually as simple as asking; he would be there.
His personal life was fueled by a distinct set of passions. Gus loved riding his Harley, participating in bike clubs, and enjoying a cold beer after a long ride. He was a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, rarely missing an opportunity to support his team, and he harbored an unrivaled zest for life that found its most joyful expression in dancing. When he wasn’t out on two wheels or enjoying the rhythm of the room, he could frequently be found on the sidelines, watching his son Augie play and later coach football.

Gus Is Survived by a Large Family
Gus was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Donna K. Glass Crawley. He is survived by a large and loving family, including his longtime companion, Trudy Scarlett; his first wife, Marjorie Glass (Shore); his second wife, Cynthia D. Glass (Vanasco); and his children, Tammy Irene Glass (Campbell), Darvell “Dar” Glass, Robert “Bobby” Prough, and Augustine Melvin Glass III “Augie.” He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Juanita Dudley (Keith), Laureen Vanasco, Raeann Vanasco, and Deanna Vanasco; his sister, Patricia A. Glass (Jackson); his grandchildren, Chassity Glass, Tyler Hutchinson, Augustine Melvin Glass IV, and Alyssandra Glass; and his great-grandchildren, Javon, Jaiz, Laniyah, and Lance, alongside a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Freedom in Christ Fellowship Church, located at 137 N. 10th St. in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. As a final tribute reflecting his enduring allegiances, relatives suggest that participants wear their preferred black and gold attire or a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey to celebrate the sports franchise Gus held so dear.
