Binghamton University’s women’s soccer team saw its impressive conference unbeaten streak come to a sudden halt on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Vermont in Burlington. While the Bearcats had already secured the top seed for the upcoming America East tournament, the regular-season finale at Virtue Field served as a stark reminder of how quickly momentum can shift in postseason play.
A Streak Snapped in Burlington
The defeat snaps a remarkable 21-game conference unbeaten run for Binghamton (8-3-5, 4-1-3 AE), a stretch of dominance that extended back to the 2024 season. According to reporting from binghamtonbearcats.com, the Bearcats controlled much of the tempo, holding a 14-8 shots advantage and a commanding 8-1 margin in the second half. Despite applying heavy pressure and earning seven corner kicks, the team could not find the back of the net to equalize after surrendering a goal in the seventh minute.
The Margin of Error in Video Review
The closing minutes of the match were defined by two critical video reviews that ultimately favored the hosts. With 2:16 left on the clock, conference-leading scorer Jahkaya Davis was challenged inside the box, but the review of the potential penalty did not go in Binghamton’s favor. The frustration peaked with 1:06 remaining when freshman midfielder Lizzie Holstein launched a 27-yard strike that hit the crossbar and bounced straight down onto the goal line. After an official review, the on-field ruling of “no goal” stood, effectively sealing the Catamounts’ narrow victory.
Looking Toward the Semifinals
Despite the loss, Binghamton remains in a strong position as the top seed for the America East Championship. The Bearcats are scheduled to host a semifinal match on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. They will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Vermont and UMBC. Tickets for the semifinal are available for purchase, priced at $12 for adults and $6 for youths 14 and under.
The tournament bracket begins this week, with quarterfinal action kicking off on Thursday, Nov. 5. No. 5 UMBC travels to face No. 4 Vermont at 3 p.m., while No. 6 UAlbany heads to No. 3 Maine for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winners of those matches will advance to join top-seeded Binghamton and No. 2 seed Bryant in the semifinals. The final championship match is currently slated for either Saturday, Nov. 14, or Sunday, Nov. 15.
For the Bearcats, the task now shifts from maintaining a historic streak to resetting for a single-elimination environment where the margin between advancement and elimination is often measured in inches—or, as the team learned in Burlington, the width of a goal line.
