Brookdale Senior Living Fire Cause Ruled as Smoking Materials by Mississippi Investigators
Two residents died and emergency responders rushed to secure an assisted living facility in Clinton, Mississippi, after an October 21 blaze erupted near a maintenance entrance, according to findings released Tuesday by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The fire at Brookdale Senior Living started outside the building before spreading into a residential wing.
Flames Spread Through Stored Household Items
State investigators found that the fire accelerated rapidly because of combustible materials stored near the entrance to the maintenance office. Mattresses, box springs, and other household items stacked in the area fueled the exterior ignition before the flames breached the interior spaces.
The facility was equipped with working smoke alarms and a fire suppression system. An automated alert from the fire alarm company notified emergency officials early in the incident.
The fire claimed the lives of 81-year-old Sandra Laird and 82-year-old Harris Anthony, both residents from Vicksburg.

“I want to offer my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of Mrs. Laird and Mr. Anthony. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said in a statement.
Brookdale Clinton and City of Clinton Respond to Findings
Brookdale Clinton released a statement Tuesday afternoon expressing condolences to the families of the victims and stating that the organization’s focus remains on caring for residents. The facility noted that staff members are assisting families in retrieving essential medications and personal belongings as safety permits, while continuing to cooperate fully with investigators.
The City of Clinton acknowledged the findings released by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, expressing gratitude to both state investigators and the Clinton Fire Department for their work on the case.
