DUI Crash Leaves Burlington Business Shuttered

A popular local business in Burlington, Connecticut, has been forced to suspend operations after a late-night collision involving an alleged drunk driver left their primary mobile asset heavily damaged. Tonn’s Marketplace announced on social media that their Farmstead Ice Cream Truck will remain closed until further notice following a crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 1.

According to Connecticut State Police, 27-year-old Branden Anderson Alvarado of Bristol was behind the wheel of a 2020 Toyota Camry SE around 1:18 a.m. when the vehicle veered off Milford Road. The car reportedly struck a concrete barrier and the utility trailer that serves as the base for the Farmstead Ice Cream Truck before coming to a stop on the market’s front lawn.

The impact was significant enough to render the Camry undrivable, though authorities confirmed that Alvarado did not report any injuries at the scene. WFSB reported that the driver refused transport to the hospital by emergency responders. While the business has confirmed the closure on Facebook, Tonn’s Marketplace has not yet provided a timeline for when the ice cream truck might return to service.

The Legal and Local Fallout

Following the collision, state police took Alvarado into custody. He faces charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain his lane. He was subsequently released on a $500 bond.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed to small businesses and public infrastructure by impaired driving. For a local operation like Tonn’s Marketplace, the loss of the Farmstead Ice Cream Truck represents more than just a temporary disruption; it highlights the vulnerability of mobile commerce assets parked in otherwise quiet suburban settings. While the legal process moves forward, the immediate impact is felt by the business owners and the community members who frequent the market.

Alvarado is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Torrington on November 16 to face the charges. As of Monday morning, no further information regarding the extent of the damages to the trailer or potential insurance complications had been disclosed by the business.

This incident follows a broader trend of traffic enforcement challenges in Connecticut, where state authorities continue to grapple with DUI incidents and lane-departure violations on local roadways. The crash remains under the jurisdiction of the Connecticut State Police, who processed the scene and handled the vehicle recovery on Sunday morning.
