Colorado Division of Aeronautics Recognized by Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame

“Receiving this award from the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame is an extraordinary honor, and it is a testament to the dedication of our current and former staff, board members and airport partners across Colorado,” said David Ulane, Director of the CDOT Division of Aeronautics.

The Colorado Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics recently accepted a special recognition award from the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame, as reported by codot.gov/programs/aeronautics. Annually, the Colorado Aviation Historical Society celebrates leaders and groups whose innovation, service, forward-thinking vision, and dedication have made a lasting mark on state aviation. The Division stands out as one of only a select few organizations to receive this honor.

Representing the agency at the ceremony were current staff members Shahn Sederberg, Hetty Beatty, and Kip McClain. They stood alongside current Division Director David Ulane and former Directors Dave Gordon, Travis Vallin, and Dennis Roberts. Decades of combined leadership and service from this group highlight a long-standing dedication to advancing Colorado’s multi-billion-dollar aviation network.

Decades of Infrastructure and Safety Transformations

Ever since its founding in 1991, the Division of Aeronautics and the Colorado Aeronautical Board have led innovative initiatives that reshaped workforce development, operational efficiency, and aviation safety across the Rocky Mountain area. The cornerstone of this mission is the Colorado Discretionary Aviation Grant Program. Operating for over 35 years, this state grant program administers critical funding for airport infrastructure projects statewide. It is powered by an innovative state aviation fuel tax structure that directly supports local airports while accessing billions of dollars in matching Federal Aviation Administration grant funds.

Beyond traditional grant funding, the agency has tackled the state’s rugged terrain through advanced technological implementations. Radar coverage and air traffic operations across Colorado’s difficult mountain airport settings and high country saw dramatic enhancements thanks to Wide Area Multilateration. The Colorado Mountain AWOS and Weather Camera Program established a vital network of Automated Weather Observing Systems on high mountain peaks and regional airports. Integrated with FAA weather cameras, this system supplies real-time data and visual weather information crucial for mountain flying safety.

Repurposing Surplus Equipment Saves Local Communities Millions

Operational savings form another pillar of the Division’s statewide impact. Through the Colorado Surplus Airport Equipment Program, operated in partnership with Denver International Airport and other local facilities, essential machinery such as runway snowplows, sweepers, and tractors are repurposed and transferred to smaller regional airports. This initiative saves local communities millions of dollars while maintaining year-round operational readiness.

Workforce development remains equally central to the agency’s long-term strategy. Financial support from the Colorado Airport Management Internship Program provides grants for student internships, helping to launch numerous successful careers in airport management throughout the nation and Colorado alike.

Safety, efficiency, and expanded opportunities in Colorado aviation have all been advanced through a long history of dedicated work, strategic foresight, and these remarkable accomplishments.
