Delta State Football Faces Independence as Gulf South Conference Drops the Sport

Delta State University’s football program is heading toward independent status after helping charter the Gulf South Conference back in 1970. Amid a wave of departures across the league, the conference will no longer sponsor football starting in the 2027-28 academic year.

The upcoming shift leaves only three football-playing institutions remaining in the Gulf South Conference: Delta State, West Alabama, and Valdosta State. Valdosta State announced earlier this month that it will move all of its sports except football to the Peach Belt Conference and transition its gridiron program to independent status in 2027.

Dwindling Membership Drives Decision to Drop Football

The erosion of the conference’s football lineup has accelerated over recent cycles. West Florida departed the GSC after the 2025 season to make the jump to Division I. North Greenville and Chowan previously left for Conference Carolinas, while Mississippi Christian University dropped its football program altogether.

Delta State Athletic Director Mike Kinnison pointed to the dwindling roster of participating schools as the core driver behind the conference’s decision to drop the sport.

“The changes in football-playing members have dwindled to three this year and would be two next year, with Valdosta State’s announcement of moving to the Peach Belt Conference in 2027,” Kinnison said. “Delta State, West Alabama, and Valdosta State are the only three football-playing schools in the Gulf South Conference. This is the last year of officially having GSC football competition, championships, etc.”

Next Steps for Delta State Athletics

As the program prepares to leave behind decades of conference competition, athletic department leadership is actively evaluating scheduling alliances and possible membership alternatives in other conferences. That search comes with logistical hurdles.

“All of this has to be balanced with financial capability to meet the demands of increased travel over larger distances,” Kinnison said.

Even as the football program enters uncharted territory, Delta State will maintain its membership in the Gulf South Conference for all other supported sports. The university’s swimming and diving teams compete separately in the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference.
