Intersection Closed in Delta Township Following Water Main Break and Boil Water Advisory
Drivers on mid-Michigan roadways faced sudden disruptions after a water main break forced the closure of a key intersection, triggering a precautionary advisory for the surrounding community. The intersection of St. Joe Highway and Canal Road in Delta Township shut down as municipal crews mobilized to address the infrastructure failure.
Township officials stated that crews were working to fix the water main break and were still working to identify the cause, as of just after noon. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route, with through traffic asked to avoid Canal between Michigan and St. Joe.
Precautionary Measures for Local Residents and Businesses
Municipal water customers, including area homes, businesses, and various facilities, were placed under a precautionary Boil Water Advisory by the township. Officials indicated that the rupture caused a drop in pressure in the township’s water supply, creating conditions where bacterial contamination may have occurred.
While officials note that bacteria are generally not harmful and are common throughout the environment, corrective measures are currently being undertaken to fix the issue. The advisory is precautionary and applies to water used for drinking and cooking.
State Rules Require Waiting Forty Eight Hours to Lift Advisory
Adhering to all mandatory state guidelines, Delta Township is collaborating closely with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Under these regulatory guidelines, a minimum of 48 hours following repair or full restoration of water service is typically required before an advisory can be lifted.
Customers will be notified when the boil water advisory has been lifted.
