Denver women's soccer hosts Pacific for Senior Day this Saturday

The University of Denver women’s soccer team is preparing to host Pacific this Saturday for Senior Day, capping off a season defined by grit, heartbreaking late-game losses, and a few standout individual performances. The match serves as the final home appearance for the team’s leaders following a stretch of West Coast Conference (WCC) play.

This season has been a lesson in the thin margins of collegiate soccer. The Pioneers have spent much of October fighting for every inch of turf, often finding themselves on the wrong side of a goal in the closing minutes. The most recent example came on October 28, when Denver fell to Loyola Marymount (LMU) due to a late goal in Los Angeles. It’s a pattern that has haunted the squad: playing high-level soccer for 80 minutes only to have the result slip away in the final act.

A Season of High Stakes and Narrow Margins

The stretch leading up to the Pacific match highlights a team that can compete with anyone but struggles to close the door. Earlier in October, the Pioneers showed they could handle the pressure of the road, earning a hard-fought win at San Francisco on October 24. However, that momentum was offset by a series of “almosts.” On October 7, the team fell just short against Pepperdine, and on October 11, they dropped a back-and-forth match in San Diego.

The WCC is a relentless gauntlet. Denver’s road opener at Santa Clara on October 3 set a challenging tone for the month, and while they managed to split points with Portland on October 17, the consistency required to climb the conference standings has been elusive.

The Bright Spots: Individual Brilliance

Despite the collective struggle to find the win column consistently, individual talent has shone through. Sophomore Lucy Garnsey has emerged as a defensive anchor for the Pioneers. Her impact was officially recognized on October 26, when she was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week. Sophomore Lucy Garnsey was named WCC Defensive Player of the Week.

The early season provided a glimpse of what happens when the Pioneers click. On September 26, Denver pulled off an upset against RV/No. 25 Saint Mary’s in their WCC debut. It was a statement win that suggested the team could dismantle ranked opponents, though they have struggled to replicate that dominance in the weeks since.

The Road to Senior Day

As the team prepares for the Pacific match, the focus shifts from the standings to the legacy of the seniors. Senior Day is more than a ceremony; it’s an emotional inflection point. For the players who have spent four years experiencing the highs of upset wins and the lows of late-game heartbreaks, this Saturday is their final game.

The path to this moment was paved with a diverse array of challenges. From the early-season road trip to Chicago—where the team faced DePaul and Northwestern in late August—to the non-conference clash with Air Force on September 17, the Pioneers have been tested in every conceivable environment.

The team’s resilience is perhaps best illustrated by their August 30 draw at Northern Colorado, where a goal from Kroska secured a 1-1 result. It was a moment of stability in a season that has otherwise felt like a rollercoaster.

The question remaining for the Pioneers is whether they can translate their individual accolades and occasional flashes of brilliance into a cohesive winning streak. As they welcome Pacific to Denver, the goal is simple: avoid the late-game lapse and send the seniors off with a victory.
