Providence, Rhode Island, is preparing for a new leadership search for its public school superintendent, according to State Rep. David Morales. Morales, the Democratic nominee for mayor, confirmed that the city will be seeking a new leader just four months after Providence regained local control of its schools following nearly seven years of state oversight.

Morales stated that his primary goal is to ensure “stability” for families and students. He noted that his team intends to participate in the selection of the next acting superintendent once the school board provides authorization, adding, “Things are moving relatively quickly, as we have seen.”

Superintendent Exit Negotiations

While the city prepares for the search, reports from The Boston Globe indicate that Superintendent Javier Montañez has retained a private attorney to negotiate an exit agreement with the school board. Although Montañez has a contract that extends through June 2027, an announcement regarding his departure may occur before the end of the year.

The potential departure of the superintendent is accompanied by further leadership turnover, as three of Montañez’s deputies have also announced they are leaving the district.

School Board Conflict

The transition comes amid public tensions within the school board. School Board President Ty’Relle Stephens stated that the board “has taken no official action” and indicated he was not authorized to provide further comment.

The board is scheduled to meet on Nov. 18, where they are expected to revisit a vote that was previously postponed regarding whether to remove Stephens from his position as president.
