Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre Transitions to Filmmaking with Psychological Thriller Terroir

Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is entering the movie business, signing on to produce a psychological thriller titled Terroir. The project, announced Thursday, explores wealth, power, and the secrets people keep to protect both within the dangerous world of a prestigious family vineyard.

Written and directed by Jesse Harris—whose previous thriller Borrego starred Lucy Hale—the film is currently in development with production targeted for spring 2027. The storyline follows a migrant farmworker and a disgraced wine critic as they uncover disturbing secrets, running up against people intent on keeping the truth buried.

Bridging the White House Podium and the Screen

Jean-Pierre’s involvement in this venture expands her public portfolio since leaving office, which also encompasses a published memoir and her separation from the Democratic Party. In an exclusive interview with The Advocate, she reflected on the parallels between her former White House role and her upcoming production work.

“People may see politics and filmmaking as completely different worlds, but I actually see a lot of overlap,” Jean-Pierre told The Advocate. “The biggest difference is that behind the White House podium, you’re responding to events in real time and communicating under intense pressure. Filmmaking is a longer creative process.”

She added that at their core, both fields rely on storytelling, bringing people together around an idea, and connecting meaningfully with an audience. Jesse Harris echoed this sentiment in the project announcement, noting that Jean-Pierre’s communication background will serve as an asset to the production.

“Karine has an extraordinary ability to communicate big ideas and bring people together around them, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her on board,” Harris said.

Jean-Pierre Transitions from White House Press Secretary to Cinema

Jean-Pierre served as press secretary for more than two years and eight months, holding the post from May 2022 through the end of Biden’s presidency in January 2025. Her tenure outlasted her two immediate successors combined. Born in Martinique to Haitian parents and raised in New York City, she made history as the first Black person and the first out LGBTQ+ person to serve as White House press secretary.

Her move into cinema follows the 2025 release of her memoir, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines. During an interview with The Advocate last October concerning the publication, Jean-Pierre talked about her departure from the Democratic Party, voiced objections to how leadership handled Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, and maintained that safeguarding vulnerable groups must stay central to the party’s mission.

The filmmakers describe Terroir as a blend of psychological suspense and folk horror. For Jean-Pierre, the film’s focus on whose experiences are recognized made the script an immediate fit.

“As someone who has spent much of my career working to ensure that people feel seen, heard, and represented, Terroir resonated with me immediately,” she stated.
