Free State boys soccer beats Topeka 4-0 to reach state quarterfinals

Free State boys soccer has secured a spot in the state quarterfinals after a dominant 4-0 victory over Topeka in the regional championship match on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026. The Firebirds used a rapid offensive start and a deep bench to neutralize the Trojans in Lawrence, capping a regional tournament run where they outscored opponents 9-0 across two games, the Lawrence Journal-World reported.

This win is more than just a bracket advancement; it is a redemption arc for a program that spent the last year haunted by a disappointing regional semifinal loss to Liberal. For the athletes and the Lawrence community, the stakes are now focused on the 6A state title.

Fast Start Disrupts Topeka’s Strategy

Free State has a reputation for slow offensive starts, but they abandoned that trend on Thursday. Junior defender Beckett Weipert struck first, finding the net from outside the penalty area less than four minutes into the match. By scoring early, Free State aimed to disrupt whatever Topeka had planned, according to coach Tyson Heck.

Coach Tyson Heck noted that the team knew Topeka would be competitive and intentionally applied immediate pressure to disrupt their organization. While the offense clicked instantly, the defense experienced some early turbulence. Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Jones was forced into several open-field plays as the Firebirds dealt with early-game anxiety and erratic positioning.

“We played their game,” junior midfielder Miguel Alarcon said. “They controlled the midfield. We tried to play faster than what we play. We just got too worked up, but leadership played a big part in taking control of our guys, knowing that these are our colors and this is our field.”

Firebirds Dictate Pace to Secure Lead

The momentum shifted permanently around the second goal. As the Firebirds settled into their defensive shell, they began to dictate the pace, preventing Topeka from maintaining possession or creating dangerous opportunities in the final third of the field. This stability allowed the offense to explode in the closing minutes of the first half.

The scoring sequence highlighted the team’s chemistry and versatility:

  • Junior midfielder Lenny Marotz assisted Miguel Alarcon for the second goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Senior midfielder Suret Qutlan then found Marotz in the center of the goal to make it 3-0 before the break.
  • Marotz added a final individual effort in the second half, scoring with under 10 minutes left in the match to seal the 4-0 victory.

This ability to rotate players without a drop in performance has become a hallmark of the Firebirds’ season. Coach Heck pointed to the second goal as the moment the team’s confidence peaked, realizing they had full control of the match.

The Road to the 6A Semifinals

The Firebirds enter the next phase of the postseason with a regular-season record of 11-4-1, a performance that earned them the home-field advantage they utilized so effectively in the regionals. However, the challenge shifts on Monday, as Free State must travel to face Dodge City in the state quarterfinal match.

The team is playing for a legacy, with Coach Heck telling his players they are making history and urging them to play a style of soccer that others will study and emulate.

Traveling to Dodge City presents a different atmospheric challenge than playing on their own turf in Lawrence. Whether the Firebirds can maintain their defensive discipline away from home will determine if they reach the 6A semifinal later next week.

“I don’t think there’s a team that can beat us,” Alarcon said. “If we keep rolling like this, if we keep playing with confidence and with pride, we’re going all the way. There’s no other answer: We’re going all the way.”

The Firebirds now have until Monday to prepare for Dodge City, where the dream of a state championship will either be sustained or halted.
