Indiana Governor Mike Braun Awards Nearly $110 Million for Local Roads and Bridges
Indiana Governor Mike Braun presented $109.9 million in state matching funds to improve infrastructure across 346 cities, towns, and counties. The funding, delivered through the Indiana Department of Transportation Community Crossings Matching Grants program, was announced during the 43rd Annual Indiana MPO-IARC Conference in Kokomo.
Local communities applied for the funding during the fiscal year 2027 call for projects in September. The program requires local governments to invest alongside the state to secure the grants.
“Good roads and bridges are essential to strong communities and a growing economy,” Gov. Braun said. “This funding ensures hundreds of Indiana communities have the necessary resources to make improvements that Hoosiers will see and use every day. What makes Community Crossings work is that local governments have skin in the game. They’re investing alongside the state to get these projects done, making roads safer, supporting local businesses and creating more opportunities for communities across Indiana to grow.”

Indiana General Assembly Established Long-Term Funding in 2017
Funding for the Community Crossings initiative originates from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. The Indiana General Assembly established long-term funding for the program through House Enrolled Act 1002 in 2017.
Since 2016, more than $2 billion in matching funds has been awarded for local road improvements.

“More than $2 billion in matching funds have been awarded for local road improvements since 2016,” said INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist. “Community Crossings is a testament to the strong partnerships between INDOT and local communities that help provide safe, efficient transportation infrastructure for our cities, towns and counties.”
Recent legislative changes set the matching grant cap at $100 million per year, and reduced the annual cap to $1 million per local unit of government per state fiscal year. INDOT has exceeded the annual $100 million cap over the past two fiscal years due to cost favorability.
Additional information and a complete list of all communities receiving matching funds in the fiscal year 2027 call for projects are available through the official state transportation network.
