“Radiant Affection”: Greg Lahti Captures the Joy of Flight in New Canvas
In his 2022 oil painting “Radiant Affection,” Little Rock area artist Greg Lahti depicts a young Canadian pilot alongside an aircraft she loves, with warm light highlighting her smile above the wing while the engine fills the foreground.
Lahti explains that the piece aims to balance two distinct elements of the aviation experience. He wanted the painting to hold both sides of that relationship: the beauty and machinery of the plane, and the unmistakable joy of the person who flies it.
From an Arkansas Crop Duster to Canadian Skies
The genesis of the painting stretches back to an earlier encounter. The subject first discovered Lahti’s work through a painting he created of an Arkansas crop duster. Conversations about flying eventually led to the pilot sharing photographs of herself and her planes, providing the visual foundation for several subsequent works.
“In this one, her affection for the plane was written all over her face,” Lahti notes, adding that he wanted viewers to feel that emotional connection before learning any of the backstory.
Finding the Moments Between Stories
Working primarily with expressive color and light, Lahti builds subjects that range from aviation and city streets to theatrical figures and imagined worlds. His artistic focus frequently settles on the moments before and after the narrative everyone else tells, seeking out quieter, less-publicized transitions in daily life.
For collectors and art enthusiasts looking to view his catalog firsthand, Lahti’s work is available locally at The Art Group Gallery. Additional pieces and updates can be found online through his official portal at greglahtiart.com and on Instagram at @greglahtiart.
