Harrisburg police deploy extra patrols for weekend Halloween crowds
“We’re going to be very visible for the public and as always, whether it’s a Halloween Saturday or it’s a random Tuesday, [if] you see something, say something, give us a call, you know we’re out here to serve the public.”
With Halloween falling on a Saturday, celebrations across the community are expected to draw larger crowds of all ages into the streets and downtown corridors. That surge has prompted the Harrisburg Bureau of Police to increase visible patrols and issue safety guidance.
Adding six officers to the beat
Sgt. Matthew Novchich with the Harrisburg Bureau of Police announced that the department is adding six officers to patrol the city. They will interact with the community during the official trick-or-treat time on Thursday.
These extra units will concentrate on areas experiencing heavier foot traffic. Officers will engage directly with families and hand out candy to children.
Downtown venues and security coordination
Beyond traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating, celebrations are slated to extend into downtown Harrisburg. Local bars and businesses are hosting their own weekend events.
Novchich noted that many of these establishments have independent security measures in place. Local police maintain established working relationships with downtown business owners to respond if any situations escalate.
Authorities urge families to increase evening visibility
Authorities are urging families to take additional safety precautions as daylight hours grow shorter ahead of the weekend. Novchich emphasized the need for visibility during evening hours.
It’s getting darker earlier now, so make sure you’ve got flashlights or glow sticks or vests on, things that are going to make you visible as you’re going down sidewalks or walking across streets, things like that with a lot of traffic going on.
Parents and caregivers are advised to ensure young pedestrians can be easily spotted by drivers on local roads. Police plan to maintain a high-visibility presence throughout the celebrations and encourage anyone who observes suspicious or concerning behavior to contact law enforcement immediately.
