New York-eligible yearlings command heavy attention at major sales, matching the footprint of Ontario stock at the London Classic Yearling Sale. The Harrisburg sale drew 142 New York-eligible yearlings, narrowly topping the 137 cataloged at Lexington.
Stallion Influence and Sales Numbers
The state’s two premier stallions—Chapter Seven on the trot and Huntsville on the pace—exert influence far beyond the Empire State, dominating restricted events while anchoring the Grand Circuit. Lexington featured 59 yearlings by Chapter Seven, while Harrisburg offers 31. On the pacing side, Harrisburg holds the advantage in yearlings by Huntsville with 29 compared to Lexington’s 24.
Sweet Lou’s son Cannibal enters the market as a prominent newcomer among pacing stallions. Cannibal’s 16 yearlings at Lexington brought $796,000 for an average of $49,875. Harrisburg has more than double the number of Cannibal yearlings with 38 scheduled to be sold.
Competition remains fierce at the venue. Cannibal’s paternal half-brother and racetrack rival, Confederate, sends 32 yearlings to his first Harrisburg group. Sweet Lou himself is represented by 29 yearlings.
Trotting Standouts
The quality of the Ontario pacing yearlings were somewhat more appealing than the trotters, but the opposite is the case in New York with the trotters holding sway over the pacers. A curated stable of 12 Harrisburg, New York-eligible yearlings highlights the depth of the catalog across four distinct categories.
Trotting colts feature elite pedigrees destined for major stakes engagements.
