Rising Traffic Fatalities on Louisiana Roads

State highway safety data documents a concerning upward trend in holiday traffic deaths. Eight people died in Halloween-related crashes in 2023. That figure rose to 13 in 2024 and reached 16 statewide during Halloween 2025.

Pedestrian safety remains a parallel challenge. Vehicle-pedestrian crashes injured 639 people across Louisiana during Halloween 2025, highlighting the vulnerability of children moving through neighborhoods after dark.

Greg Fischer, a spokesman for the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, points out the immediate dangers drivers face on holiday nights. Remember there are going to be kids on the road, and pedestrian safety is a serious issue in Baton Rouge and across the state, Fischer said.

The Shift Toward Controlled Community Events

To mitigate these risks, a growing number of parents are bypassing traditional neighborhood walks in favor of organized, contained alternatives. Keonta Courtney explains that she prefers bringing her children to trunk-or-treat gatherings for a more secure environment.

It’s better to come to activities such as this so all the kids can be involved because it’s safer and security is around, Courtney said.

Municipalities are leaning into the trend. The City of Baker hosted its annual trunk-or-treat event for the ninth consecutive year. Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn notes that standard door-to-door trick-or-treating exposes participants to multiple hazards.

This could be 60 houses that will stretch several blocks. Some blocks are well lit, some are not. You have the danger of traffic. You got the danger of dark areas where you can’t keep an eye on your child, Dunn said.

Precautions for Neighborhood Celebrations

Law enforcement agencies emphasize that families choosing traditional routes must remain vigilant. L’Jean McKneely urges parents to maintain close supervision and increase visibility.

Be with your kids as they’re walking. Make sure that you’re with them, number one. Don’t leave them unsupervised. Make sure they’re wearing some reflective gear, McKneely said, adding that trunk-or-treat setups lower traffic risks by consolidating families into a single, managed space.

Safety officials maintain that whether families choose residential streets or parking lot gatherings, visibility and driver awareness remain critical. Drivers are urged to slow down, watch for pedestrians, and avoid driving impaired.
