Governor Kay Ivey joined state and local leaders on Wednesday to celebrate a nearly $450 million capital investment by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama to expand production at its Montgomery facility, governor.alabama.gov reported. The funding targets engine manufacturing upgrades to support hybrid and extended-range electric vehicle technologies, alongside assembly line preparations for the refreshed Santa Fe and the all-new Tucson.
Reconfiguring Operations for Advanced Propulsion Systems
The manufacturing site will reconfigure portions of its operations to handle advanced propulsion systems. This technical shift aims to give buyers broader powertrain options as the automotive market transitions. Mark Rader, chief operating officer at HMMA, emphasized that the new capital injection shows steady faith in the plant's operational capacity.
These investments will support new vehicle production, expanded engine manufacturing capabilities and advanced propulsion technologies that provide customers with greater choice and flexibility as the automotive industry continues to evolve, said Mark Rader.
Rader added that the financial commitment serves as an endorsement of the local workforce, the existing supplier network, and the broader regional economy. Since vehicle production initially kicked off in May 2005, the Montgomery plant has committed nearly $2.2 billion in total capital investments.
Generating Billions in Local Economic Impact
The 4,200 workers currently employed at the HMMA complex form the backbone of a production ecosystem that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $5 billion. According to state figures, the manufacturing site contributes roughly $100 million in state tax revenue and more than $12 million in local tax revenue each year.
Alabama Department of Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair noted that the ongoing expansions reinforce the state’s standing as a prominent American automotive hub. The facility previously underwent significant retooling projects, such as a $410 million expansion announced in November 2019 to prepare for the introduction of the Santa Cruz compact utility vehicle, as noted in historical corporate releases from HMMA.

Local Leadership Perspectives on Long-Term Growth
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed pointed out that the plant has fundamentally shaped the municipal economy for over twenty years. Anna Buckalew, president and CEO of the Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing decades of collaboration between local stakeholders and corporate executives.
Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton stressed that the region’s early infrastructure choices decades ago laid the groundwork for continuous industrial recruitment. Beyond assembly lines, Hyundai maintains an active philanthropic footprint in the River Region, contributing nearly $1 million annually over the past four years to regional charities, local public school systems, and community quality-of-life initiatives.
