Town Governed Entirely by Dogs in California Mountains
Nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains at an elevation of 5,400 feet above sea level, the unincorporated California town of Idyllwild offers cooler summer temperatures, late-fall colorful foliage, and winter snowy landscapes. The mountain town sits around a 50-mile drive west from Palm Springs and 48 miles northeast of Temecula. Beyond its geography and outdoor recreation, Idyllwild is known for an unusual municipal structure: its government is run entirely by dogs.
Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller served as the first canine mayor following an initiative by Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends that raised $31,000 through paid voting. Following Max the Second, the current mayor is Max the Third, who began his term in 2022 at the age of three months. Because the town is unincorporated, there is no official mayor’s office, but Mayor Max maintains a public schedule of appearances across the community.
Hiking and Outdoor Recreation
The mountain destination provides numerous trails for visitors, many of which accommodate dogs on leashes. The Ernie Maxwell Trail spans five miles out and back with an elevation gain exceeding 740 feet, featuring shaded paths, stream crossings, and valley views. The Strawberry Creek Path behind the Idyllwild Brewpub offers a shorter, dog-friendly route running just under 1.5 miles along a shaded creek. For experienced hikers, the Deer Springs Trail leads toward Suicide Rock, though dogs are prohibited and a permit from Mount San Jacinto State Park is required. Hikers can also tackle the summit of San Jacinto Peak, though park officials advise visitors to adjust to the altitude and watch out for rattlesnakes along the trails.
Local Dining and Village Attractions
In the center of the village, visitors can explore shops like The Funky Bazaar, which features steampunk decor and unusual gifts, or pick up supplies at Mountain Paws. Dining options include the Idyllwild Brewpub, which serves on-site brewed beers, craft cocktails, burgers, pulled pork, and crispy Brussels sprouts on a heated patio. Mama’s Egg House provides breakfast options until 4 p.m. and operates every day except Tuesday and Wednesday. Entertainment in the village includes catching a film at The Rustic Theatre, operating since 1952, or learning local history at the Idyllwild Area Historical Society.
