Ihsan Sacko’s Late-Season Surge Secures USL Championship Honors
Phoenix Rising FC forward Ihsan Sacko has been named the USL Championship Player of the Month for October, a recognition of the five goals he tallied during the final stretch of the regular season that proved essential to the club’s postseason qualification. The league announced the award, noting that the 29-year-old’s late-campaign production helped Rising secure a spot in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
Sacko’s performance in October served as the engine for a desperate Phoenix push. With the club fighting to break into the top eight, he delivered a brace in a 3-2 victory against Las Vegas Lights FC. He followed that performance with two more goals in a critical 3-1 road win against Orange County SC, a direct rival in the standings. He capped the month by scoring in a 3-3 draw against Lexington SC, a result that finalized Phoenix’s place in the postseason on the final day of the regular season.
“This October reward is just as special to me because it is a month where the whole team has shown character in this championship where if we did not win the games in a row we would not have been in playoffs,” Sacko said. He added that the achievement was particularly meaningful given his physical state earlier in the month. “It is also for me personally a special month because at the beginning of October I was still injured and I was able to come back thanks to God in time to help my team win the games and be able to score important goals.”
Sacko Wins Golden Boot and Leads League in Goals Added
The impact of Sacko’s month extended beyond his immediate goal-scoring output. By the end of the regular season, he had recorded 17 goals, earning him the Championship’s Golden Boot award as its leading scorer. According to data provided by American Soccer Analysis, Sacko led the league with a +10.8 Goals Added mark, highlighting his value to the side. He also tied for the team lead with five assists.
Phoenix Rising Head Coach Pa-Modou Kah pointed to the consistency of the striker’s effort throughout the season as the foundation for this recognition. “It’s deserved as he showed year-long why he’s one of the best strikers in the league and a golden boot winner,” Kah said.
The selection process for the monthly honor involved a weighted poll. Sacko earned 50 percent of the vote, which was distributed among the USL Championship Technical Committee, a national panel of independent media representatives, and an online fan vote conducted at USLChampionship.com. Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Memo Rodríguez finished in second place with 25 percent of the vote after recording two goals and two assists in four outings to help lead the side to a second-place finish in the Western Conference.
The Stakes of the Final Stretch
The 17-goal total illustrates how the squad relied on his clinical finishing in matches including the 3-3 draw against Lexington SC.
