Ismael Freytes-Rodriguez Sentenced to 18 Years for Child Rape in Springfield

A Springfield man convicted of multiple counts of child rape will spend nearly two decades behind bars, following a sentencing decision handed down in Massachusetts. Ismael Freytes-Rodriguez, 39, received a prison term of 18 to 20 years, Western Mass News reported.

The case, prosecuted by the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, centers on offenses committed in April 2023. At the time of the assaults, the victim was 12 years old, according to trial evidence presented by prosecutors.

Judge Imposes 18 to 20 Year Prison Term

During the sentencing proceedings, legal counsel presented divergent recommendations regarding the duration of the confinement. Prosecutors from the Hampden District Attorney’s Office pushed for a sentence ranging from 20 to 25 years. Conversely, defense attorney representation for Freytes-Rodriguez asked the court for a sentence of seven to 10 years, coupled with three years of probation.

Ultimately, the judge imposed the 18-to-20-year term. Freytes-Rodriguez was found guilty on a total of six charges:

  • Three counts of rape of a child with force
  • Three counts of aggravated rape and abuse of a child

Lauren LaBel, spokesperson for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, noted that the abuse charges were legally elevated to aggravated status specifically due to the defendant’s age.

The victim, now 16 years old, was present in the courtroom for the sentencing. A formal victim impact statement was read on their behalf, detailing the personal toll of the crimes.

“These are among the most heinous crimes imaginable, and when a child is the victim, the harm is especially devastating,” Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said in a statement. “Protecting children from these horrific acts and holding offenders accountable is a responsibility we take extremely seriously.”
